Hi,

I've got a Malkoff 3-6 D cell drop in and want to use it in my 2D Maglite. The 2D Maglite has a serial number starting with "D".

Is this possible to do? I obviously don't want to break anything trying this so thought I'd check here first.

I figure it's just under powering the drop in as it will only be running on 2 D cells rather than 3-6.

Many thanks

Nope.

3-6C/D drop-ins have operating voltage of 3.4 to 9V. Two D-cells will only provide 3V.

If you were to get two D-cell adapters that accept two or three AA or AAA cells in each, you will have enough voltage to run the drop-in properly. They are kinda hard to find, but eBay has some sellers that offer them. Search for "AA D cell adapter" and you will get them. Make sure that you get the ones that fit two or three AA, not a single loader.

Also, if you do go this route, however, expect a reduced runtime.

You need to check out BigWaffles graphs. You're idea is better then you can

imagine.

My .02 FWIW YMMV

Thanks for the link - from looking though it looks like BigWaffles is using a Malkoff 4-6 drop in with a 3D Maglite, but I have a 2D (unless I've missed something in the thread you linked to?)

Otherwise could I run 3 x C cells instead to provide the voltage to run the 4-6 drop in.

Apologies to everyone, I'm quite new to all of this :duh2:

I had my Malkoff 3-6D drop-in running off of three cr123's in my 2D Maglite. I used 5/8 inch automotive heater hose (slit open on one side) and 1 inch PVC pipe. Put the batteries in the hose and slide it into the PVC pipe. I extended the tailcap spring w/ a nut and bolt. Find the right size and length of nut and bolt and secure it to the end of the spring, so that the bolt makes contact w/ the batteries when tightened. You could also use a magnet and a steel ball bearing to extend the length of the batteries.
