Re: Malkoff "Hound Dog" coming soon!

OK..indoor 'beige wall' beamshots.

The lights are all 7' from the wall, with the camera 7.5' from the wall. The wall is beige. The camera is a P&S set on 'Snap' with flash turned off.

The control shot is a Surefire 6P lego with a Surefire P60 incan lamp assembly, running on 2x CR123 primaries:

Next is a Malkoff M61 on 2x CR123 primaries, in an MD2:

Next is our new guest, the Malkoff 'Hound Dog' on an MD3 with 2x AW IMR 18500 cells:

Now we have a light I've had set up for a few months now. A TnC prototype head with a stock McR38 reflector, with an ArcMania-built GDuP light engine providing 1.6A on high, to an R5 XP-G emitter, running a single 2600 mAH 18650:

The last competitor is an SST-50 emitter, direct-drive with a little over 3A measured at the tail from an AW 17670, in a stock McR38 reflector:

Finally, the two most closely matched lights, side-by-side. On the left, the TnC head with stock McR38 reflector and 1.6A to the emitter. On the right, the Malkoff Hound Dog, with McR38-XP-G-Malkoff reflector at 1.488A to the emitter:

To my eye, the brightness of both XP-G/McR38 lights is nearly the same, but the focus of the Malkoff Hound Dog is slightly better than the stock McR38 reflector in the TnC head.

What do y'all think?

I like the beam of the A TnC prototype head with a stock McR38 reflector, with an ArcMania-built GDuP light engine providing 1.6A on high, to an R5 XP-G emitter, running a single 2600 mAH 18650:

Re: Malkoff "Hound Dog" coming soon!

I agree with you, and think the hot spot on the 'Dog is more defined.
Thats gonna be some big fun outside in the dark.
They both look very equal in brightness on my 22" LCD monitor.
And if you move back from your desk about 10 inches ... you'll see that the Alien has eyes that glow quite brightly.
Anyone else see the Alien?

Looks nice. I know the official number, but what do you estimate the lumens to be at?

Re: Malkoff "Hound Dog" coming soon!

Down the dog's throat..bezel ring and lens removed:

I wanted to remove the reflector to compare it to a stock McR38, but it's pretty snug, and I don't want to wreck it.

Re: Malkoff "Hound Dog" coming soon!

Wow that's a pretty larger emitter-to-reflector size ratio. THROW MONSTER! Its good to see reflectors' making a comeback with all these TIRs' out there.

I did, but the left I was brighter than the right.

Re: Malkoff "Hound Dog" coming soon!

Since nobody but me thinks the the TnC head with stock McR38 reflector and 1.6A to the emitter looks better I think you should sell it to me.

Re: Malkoff "Hound Dog" coming soon!

One edge the TnC headed light has is in low beam. The low is much lower than the Hound Dog. It's almost a moon-mode.

I told Gene, this afternoon, the only thing I would change about the Hound Dog is to make the low lower.

Re: Malkoff "Hound Dog" coming soon!

If high is actually 325 OTF, low isn't 50. That's 15% of high, and it sure looks like more to me.

In a 2-stage light, my personal preference is a low which is just enough to get around, and high is to do the job the light was designed for.

Re: Malkoff "Hound Dog" coming soon!

It seems to be real similar to the old M60 except brighter. The ability to do dual modes is nice and to take either 2x18650 or 4x123 is also nice.

What's the runtime?

Did a runtime test last night on my Hound Dog.

MD3 with 2x18500's AW

114 minutes until light shut off.

I thought I read the low was 50-60 lumens, maybe I'm thinking of the WC.

Oh well, mine should be here Weds, cant wait!!

Good work on the Runtime Scot! Almost two hours at 325 lumens is very nice!! :twothumbs

Re: Malkoff "Hound Dog" coming soon!

Cool. Given that 2x18500 AW cells have 12.6 Wh (4.2*2*1500), and that 2x18650 AW have 21.8Wh, or 173% capacity, thus runtime with 18650s should be 197 minutes or 3.3 hours. On the high mode. This is really nice given the lumen output.

With that said, Gene keeps LEO's in mind when designing his lights, and anything too low is rather useless.

Re: Malkoff "Hound Dog" coming soon!

I think 40-60 lumens is a perfect low. His choice of lumens for high/low is right on the money.

What kind of runtime can you expect on low?
