Malkoff M91

Help Support CPF:

Well I’m thinking any 91 produced in the last 2 years will perform this way.my 91B right off Malkoffs site will run on a single 18650. We are just finding out now😁

I contacted gene as soon as we saw this because wanted to know if it was ok to use a single 18650.Im thinking he might sell a few more 91’s nowadays. 3-12 volts! With good output over the full range? WOW 😮

i find this both funny and impressive. on one hand its impressive because you guys are so responsible with your drop-ins that for two years now noone has discovered the M91's can work with 1x l-ion. on the other hand its funny for the same exact reason. one has got to think this makes the M61 pointless, no?

Thanks for this info. I will be getting the M91BW with Md2 today. I've been looking for a MD2 sized light like this. This is a real game changer to me. The ideal drop in. I can't believe Gene doesn't advertise this.

Will it make the M61 obsolete? I'd say no. That is unless we start getting M91L, LL. LLL varieties. Even so I'd imagine the M61 is more efficient. If not you would think Gene could reduce his lineup some and then expand it with new products. I wonder what his big sellers are. Does he sell more drop ins or full lights?

It seems similar to the driver Elzetta uses in their AVS head. Sitting next to me are two brand new CR123s......

Well the M61 is a totally different animal. The beam is very different then the M91 so I very much doubt one could replace the other.Yes the 61 is more efficient and has better throw. It to will run below advertised volts but way reduced in output. The 91 seems like it will run from 3 volts to 12 volts with good output all the way. I’m going to have to do some testing on this bad boy.

Ha ha. Nope. I'm going to a chili competition this morning, followed by an indoor gun range.

Output from two CR123s is greater than from a single Li-Ion, and less than two Li-Ions.

Although I've always liked the M91 more than the M61, the M61 series still has a few major advantages;
  • Epic runtimes on 2x LiIon; this M91B will operate at its ~double wattage 'normal mode' on typical 2xLiIon configurations.
  • Far better compatibility with CR123's; The M91B has been shown to be very very demanding on 3xCR123 (to the point that an M91A would probably be 'better'), and my sense is that it will simply shred any attempts at a 2xCR123 configuration.

I must say this really is a nice surprise, and unexpectedly opens up opportunities with my numerous 1x18650 hosts as well.
Would I have known that, I probably would have purchased two, lol - this new module really is two dropins in one, with its 'half-output' mode from 1x18650.
It would be a nice confirmation for someone to do an official regulated runtime / output test - I would be guessing that the 1x18650 run should exhibit some declining output throughout the 18650 discharge.

And yes, just before I logged in to check this thread (again), I was ruminating on why the CPF 'brain trust' hadn't figured out this lower input voltage configuration until now; a Malkoff dropin with that wide of a voltage range has been sort of a holy grail idea for years. :)

This driver in a Hound Dog would be very interesting!!

I also would have purchased two had I known that they operate from an 18650.

Ever since getting my first SHO, my quick way to verify that it's a Super is to screw the head onto an MD2. If it fails to light, it's a Super....really surprised this wasn't found earlier.

Thanks, greatscoot!!

Gene's website still lists the older specs for the M91 dropins, even though the driver has been changed. I may need a "W"... 😀

Just ran a partially used cr123 in my new M91BN. Starting volts was 3.1. Was still running when I took it out. Not very bright maybe 20-30 lumens or so. Lasted over an hour. Battery was down to 2.8! Nice to know you can use a single 3 volt if it really came down to it. I’m liking the 91 more and more now.
