Hi,

Does anyone know whats the Max power from a trail bike you can get to run a powerful headlight?

Say a XR650R for example. A few folks upgraded their electrical system to power 100-140w Halogen lamps + a single HID kit.

Is there anyone that knows how to get alot more power? Say to power 28v 600w aircraft landing light lamp?

Any ideas?

thanks.

The problem is the permanent magnet alternator in motorcycles. The output scales with the RPMs of the engine. You might power that light with a specially wound stator, but only at 6000 rpm. At idle forget it. Most replacement stators are rated at 200 to 250 watts. That's about as much useful wattage as you can get without resorting to using stronger magnets in the flywheel.

If you want a lot of light go with an upgraded stator, a good battery and some automotive style HID lights. Two will give about 5000 lumens and only use 80 or so watts. A 600 watt aircraft landing light is only about 7000 lumens. They are not that efficient.

Or go with one of my custom built LED lights. About 80 watts and less than or equal to 7000 lumens (I dont want to get too technical but thats by my guess from my untrained eye). I also need to make more first. :twothumbs

:duck: Well to be fair and honest I have no idea what the output is but 8 x 900= 7200. Thats just calculation. I know its not there but hey, I dont have anything other than my eyes to guess with. Hence the "less than or equal to" part.

Sorry, I thought you were joking. I'm not very current on high power LED's, so I thought you were blowing smoke when you claimed 7000 lumens. Combined with other member's frequent derision of "looks good to my eyes" appraisals for automotive lighting and your comments of such, I thought you were making a rather dry joke that had me laughing for awhile. :)

Haha. Yeah, I cant say what its exact output is at all but I can tell you it is bright. :twothumbs
