These NiMH's are like any others: their spontaneous discharge is greatest when fully charged and the rate drops when they are about one half or a bit less full. Voltage measurement alone will not identify this level; battery testers are needed to do this. As an approximation, they can be run dry and recharged for the time it takes to get one-half of a full charge. Time each of these for yourself. This comes from Silverfox's many threads on the subject.
Failure to care for the packs will cause them to spontaneously discharge faster and faster, until, as I learned the hard way, they need to be repacked because in a few days, they were useless.
If given periodic topping off or maintenance as suggested above, they should last more than two years. In other respects, the X990 is a very useful light, and the batteries are, IMHO, the weak point.
