I was thrilled to stumble across this hitherto unknown (unknown to me anyway) SAK model: http://www.eknifeworks.com/webapp/e...=&Mode=Brand&PriceStart=&Brand=117&SKU=V53441

Looks as if Vic just added pliers to the superb little Tinker to produce the Mechanic.

Mechanic looks as if it could be my long sought after, perfect EDC pocket multitool - to replace my current EDCed Tinker.

Anyone have experience with the Mechanic? How do the pliers compare to Gerber Clutch, LM P4, or similar?

I imagine the Mechanic's pliers don't stack up well against the SOG Crossgrip's pliers, but none of the other tiny multitool pliers do well against the Crossgrip.

It's been a while since I've used the swiss army pliers, but from what I remember they don't even compare to any of the pliers on the current multi tools. They're more like heavy duty tweezers, than pliers. That's not saying they're bad if that's what you're looking for, as long as you're aware of the limitations, then it's not a problem. But I would say using the name "Mechainc" is a bit of stretch for that use, because I can't imagine that being of any use to a mechanic.

I have one with the same pliers that is my EDC and has been for over a year now. The pliers are not comparable to the true multi-tools like the Gerber. But they are handy and I have used them many times for many different purposes. In reality, even the Gerber pliers are just for quick fixes and light-duty work. Any real "mechanic" will have real mechanics tools to do the job right.

The pliers are definitely small. I have them on my Cybertool and they seem to be ok for very small things. I suppose you could compare them to a Gerber Clutch or a Leatherman P4. The Leatherman Juice series pliers was about the smallest I found that was still relatively useful to me.

As to how much I have used the pliers on my Cybertool. I have used them a little. Most of the time though I was near a fullsize pair of pliers and used them instead. This is also one of the reasons I switched to a Super Tinker for my EDC. I found that I used the scissors more often.

From a SAK standpoint. Pick up the Mechanic model, add it to your collection! It's impossible to have too many SAKs!!! :D

Thanks for a first hand report, RebelRAM. Also, thanks to everyone else who responded.

Was set to order a Mechanic, but saw pics of the Wegner Journeyman. Very close to the Mechanic but with better looking pliers.

Journeyman has beefier pliers with a better spring mechanism and an actual slipjoint pivot system to adjust the spread of the jaws. Looks like Journeyman could grab onto somewhat bigger objects and exert a little more torque without slipping or breaking the pliers.

Decisions, decisions....
