Military, quasi-military headlamp

Just curious. What does the government, either true military,Army, Navy, Marines, Seals, Special Forces, etc or quasi-military such as FBI, SWAT,BATF, etc use or approve for headlamp use? Are there any actual specifications they must meet or just what some higher buracrat dictates? Does anyone have actual knowledge of "specs" without "guessing"?

Well, there is no "Official" headlamp, just like there's no official flashlight or "Navy Seal" watch. A few guys on a team buy a Luminox and marketing runs away with things.

You could look up NSN numbers and see what's out there. Plus, there are always those who find something better than what they were issued /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

The closest thing to an Army issue flashlight are those stupid anglehead lights. Some units are buying and issuing SureFires for their rifles, we have some somewhere I'm told. And the EOD guys at the post I was at had an L2 IIRC as an issue item. You might see an entire Army SF A team with some brand of headlamp, but that is probably a unit purchase. Every unit has a small slush fund type thing. The commander has some money that he can spend at his discretion to item for his troops. My brigade all got Gerber multitools, and combat slings. My company all got our names sewn onto helmet bags, and some engineer castles for out earplugs. Nothing official, just a morale booster type thing. Same with units that have a lot of money to buy the really neat toys. Most of the ads you see for "official issue" are total bunk. Sure, one company of 110 guys, out of the 130,000 in the Middle East might have issued brand X of light, but that's just them.

ACMarina, and Unicorn thank you. I had suspicions there was not an "OFFICIAL ISSUE" for the government. I hoped someone had personal knowledge of one of the "special" units and what they used and why.

Unicorn,

SOF magazine is full of ads talking about how everything has been tested, used and abused by the troops and blah, blah, blah but I don't recall seeing troop photos with all the neat stuff the ads talk about.

I always suspected that what you said was probably true but I'm glad to hear someone who knows say so.

The last time I was there, our supply guys got ahold of around 75 Inova X5 flashlights. Someone dug up a case of 6 volt lithium batteries that were the same size as CR123A cells. I have one but did not use it as I had quite my luxeon based lights.

If the Proton Photon is all that they say it is, I can see thousands of those heading to the desert eventually. If Proton gets a National Stock Number for the Photon, us CPF'ers will have a hell of a time getting ours.

Wow, that was kind of surprising to hear. I figured that the guys going on raids and in combat at night always had some kind of lighting. It's great that we're helping the predator guys do their job, but it would be nice to sponsor a couple of companies of guys going directly into combat. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/icon23.gif
