I got my Milkyspit head this week

I've been patient, now its here, I ordered a Surefire KL2 head based M273 (I was lucky enough to get a crenelated KL2  Milky), this is 3 x Seoul P4 LED's (in this case my own supplied W0 bin :D) housed in 3 x McR-16 reflectors. With a nice heatsink and current regulation. This light should give me around 2hrs of full output on the 2200mAh 18650's I'll be feeding it with. I haven't tested this yet but will later, though I got a good use searching for firewood the other evening, then in my daughters 'Wendy' house illuminating her drawing :D. Also good to note even when tailstanding it didn't become more than warm on a long run.

The output is good, wide spill with reasonable throw, well useful enough for any of my outdoor tasks. I opted for M273 instead of M375 because 120min runtime instead of 80 is important for me. I'm glad I did as this is going to be a tool more than a show-off light and the output is plenty enough.
Again, I hope to add some outdoor beamshots later, compared to my cree based McGizmo XR-19.

I ordered 1 and 2 x 18650 bodies for this, they're Leef M series bodies and they're beautiful! The annodising is A1 , I'm really pleased and just have to wait for the Leef tailcap I ordered to make a better HA match.

So at a glance the M273 whole light is:-

3 x Seoul P4 W0 bin LED's
3 x McR-16 reflectors
Surefire KL2 head

1 x 18650 Leef Project M body,

Surefire Z58 tailcap

Nekomane tailguard

Gorgeous ;)

A couple of hasty beamshots, first wall shot, left to right, M273(3 x Seoul P4), XR-19(1 Cree XR-E), Raw NS XR-E (1 x Cree XR-E)

Although it may not look like it all beamshots were aimed at the upright stick, left of centre.

By the way, if you think this review is pitiful, please give me some advice or pointers as this is my first review  , thanks

EDIT adding a couple of pics from post #9

...my favourite combination but now with rather fetching Leef hex tailcap with McClicky switch, I love the colour I know it doesn't match the body but it's cool :D

tailcap choices  Nekomane'd Z58 or Leef Hex?

I know which I prefer

and the different tubes...

Great post Ian! What a nice light. I have an M-180 and love its beam for outdoor use too. I love the crenelated bezel too- lucky guy! :)

What do you think of the M-bodies' gripability? Functionally and appearance-wise I prefer it to standard cross-hatching.

Re: Milkyspit M273 Head, Leef 18650 body

Thanks Chronos

I really like the M bodies, I prefer the look of the smoother annodised finish, the standard leef 18650 bodies from lighthound are grippier and may prove better in wet conditions. For me the body great, though in a gloved hand etc the 'cross hatching' may be best.

I've got a near twin but with a Ti bezel and an SW01 tail---the "accessories" my add-ons in case any one is wondering. It's a light and a half and I'm glad I went the 273 as well--more useable time for my purpose.

So, this light will get 2 hours of runtime with just one 18650 or were you talking about using the 2x18650 body to achieve this?

Re: Milkyspit M273 Head, Leef 18650 body

Yes, 2 hrs runtime with 1 x 18650, 4 hrs with the 2 x 18650 body :naughty:
cool huh!

*Edit* some rough beamshots added to first post, sorry my camerawork is not so good :ohgeez:

I decided on the Project-M bodies having grooving instead of knurling for a few reasons... one, IMHO it does look nice... two, it has relatively fewer sharp edges so the anodize should wear better over time (hard anodizing tends to wear away first at any sharp edges or corners on a surface)... and three, while it won't help much in keeping your flashlight's battery tube from rotating in your hand, it should do at least as well as knurling for keeping the light from sliding out of your grip.

Ian's light should run for roughly 2h using 1x18650 AW 2200mAh protected Li-ion cell.

On 2x18650 AW 2200mAh protected Li-ion cells, the light should run for 4h40m.

Either way, output should remain ruler-flat at roughly 273 lumens for all but the last minute or two of runtime. :)

A little update with pictures of my new Leef hex tailcap and also the 2 x 18650 body I hadn't photograped to begin with,

Thanks Ianb. Nice review and I really liked the beamshot and comparisons. Great 1st review!
:goodjob:

Nice light Ian! I am trying to decide myself on what I want Milky to create for me. How long did the build take?

I had a few extra things (Shot Show, supplying my own LED's and more) which delayed the build, so it should be much faster than this, but it was just shy of 3 months order to in my hand, I love it, well worth the wait

Ian ordered at just about the worst-possible time in terms of my availability... had travel, family obligations, and more to contend with. Lately the builds have been much faster. Still might take 2-3 weeks though, for an order placed today. I'm working on bringing the lead time down as much as possible, and admittedly there's still some work to do.

On the other hand, people who wait often end up with a better light than they ordered since I will typically incorporate new emitters, better converters, improved build techniques, etc., into the builds as the landscape changes. With the customer's permission of course! :naughty:

Sorry Ian, just wanted to add my two pence. :)

no problem Milky, what he said :D

...from my build I got a KL2 with the crenelated bezel, worth 3 more months wait for sure! and I got a better o-ring to seal the head.

Ian :)

Okay I had a quick measure, my ruler is in mm so these are metric with rough imperial measurements...

1 x 18650 Nekomane Z58 - 154 mm (~6")
1 x 18650 Leef Hex - 156 mm (~6")

2 x 18650 Nekomane - 226 mm (~8.9")
2 x 18650 Leef Hex - 228 mm (~8.9")

hope that helps...

Ian :)
