I just fit a standard MM lamp into a Soli so I know it fits. Just for fun I was thinking of powering it with a 10440 at nominal 3.6 Volts. Has this been done before? Am I asking for instaflash?

Thanks

I have put a 14500 in a cutdown AA with a standard mini bulb, no smoke and it worked OK. ( I have bunch of extra standard bulbs - I can send you a couple if you need them )

Couldn't you mod a Rebel into it and direct drive it with the 10440 ?

Wrong Forum I know ... :nana: But maybe someone who knows about LED Flashlights, too reads this ...

I don't think 10440s have the capacity to drive a rebel...I could be wrong though. and lumiled rebel is easily damaged by soldering [see brlux's thread Mod a Mag with a Rebel.]

solitaires are probably one of the hardest to mod lights simply because its so small. if you want an LED based single AAA light consider looking up the fenix L0P-CE

other than hotplate soldering I think it can only be worked by a temperature regulated solder gun with a pencil [not chisel] head and low temperature solder....

not to stray off topic here
I don't have 10440s at my disposal but I have 14500s and my minimag bulb didn't fail

EDIT: I didnt know Will did this too =P

i've done this. won't "instaflash".

however, i've run into a couple of problems.

1) the Soli, running off of the 10440 with 2xAA MiniMagBulb heats up fast. if you shut the Soli off after 5-10minutes of use by screwing the head unit (containing the reflector and lens) down all the way, the tip of the bulb MELTS a small circular area on the lens. turning it off via unscrewing the tailcap is an option, but not optimal to say the least. i don't know of a Soli tailcap switch that is available.

2) SOME, not all, of the 2xAA/2xAAA MiniMagLite bulbs live a very short life powered off of the 10440. Just last evening i went through two of them. the first one ran for twenty minutes (yes, i know, longer than the typical 5-10 minutes that i run it - "brain fade" as we say in autoracing, or "brain cramp" as i sometimes term it) and worked fine. when i realized how hot it was getting, i turned it off to let it cool for 10min. it flashed the second time it was powered up. the second bulb i put in, ran on for 5-10min, then cooled for 10 minutes - the fourth time it was powered up, it flashed. the third bulb has maybe 40min on it in short 5-10 min run intervals and is still working fine.

the bulb would probably last longer just being run continuously and not subjected to the thermal cycles of on-off, on-off.

i think, soon i'll do a test and run it continuously no matter how hot it gets and see if the bulb will outlive the charge in a single 10440 cell.
