MN20 or MN21 on Double Barrel?

If I recall it correctly from the post here, we can mod. the battery compartment of the DB to fit 123.

If we can do so, can we put the MN20 or MN21 head on the DB 4AA? Then we can use 6 123 in series and parallel as M6. Now we get a poorman M6.

Will the current be too much for the housing and switch assembly?

I am not a big fan of 123, but if it can reach that point, I will jump on it.

Has anyone done this?

These LA's have no reflector. You'd need a M6 top end.

I haven't found any W/A bulbs that would run particularly well with 6 123's in parallel or serial. The best bet for A DB4AA, IMHO, is to use 4 @ A or AA batteries running a #0139 W/A bulb rated at 4.8V, 1.92 A, 9.22W,and 203 L with a rated life of 35 hours. You'd get < an hour of run time with 1800 mAh AA NiMH's and > an hour with 2450 - 2700 mAh A's. The A batteries are the same diameter as a 123. The 123 dimensionally can be described as a 2/3 A.

Actual Lumen output would probably be in the 160 range because of voltage drop.

This approach is much cheaper and significantly brighter than doing a P61 mod.

Did someone put a P91 on a DB 6AA before? I wonder if someone did try it with 6 123s in 4AA?

Brock's page shows that a P91 causes 3 123's to have a voltage drop to only 6.25 V. 6 123's in parallel would deliver 7.35 V which would significanly overdrive the LA.

That's why the P91 mods have been done with DB 6AA's and 6 NiMH's with a voltage drop to < 7 v.

A little while ago, YCLO posted this 4aaa/P61 conversion together with pics compared to E2. Very impressive results.

A p61 like YCLO's DB 4AAA mod would be very nice and more practical in a DB 4AA than in a DB 6AA but:

1.) the L/A costs > $20 vs. about $2 for the W/A 4.8V 1.92 A lamp.

2.) significant wire soldering, drilling, reflector removal and bulb retainer modification is necessary for the P61 where none is needed for the bulb swap.

3.) The P61 will put out about 120 L vs. an expected > 160 L with the W/A bulb.

This is the reasoning which led me to mod only one DB 6AA with a P91. I'm going to insert higher output W/A bulbs in other DB 6AA's with stock components in several others. In a small number of other DB 6AA's I will put even higher wattage bulbs and Carley aluminum reflectors.

Is it possible to use the #0139 W.A lamp in DB 6AA/8AA as well ?

You can't use that 4.8 V lamp in the DB6AA (unless you wastefully load 2 dummies and 4 batteries), but you can in a DB 8AA in stock serial / parallel setup.

Alkaline AA's would run brightly for not more than an hour and NiMH 1800's should do well for more than 1 1/2 hours. 2450 mAh A cells should comfortably exceed 2 hours.

Thanks Lemlux, I know W.A has another bulb that fits the 8AA. #01307 ..4.8V, 1.10A, 104.3 lumen, 5.28W.

It will probably give an output equal to the Surge with longer burn time since the efficacy is 19.8(!)

I concur with your assessment of the 4.8 V 1.1 A bulb. In a serial / parallel DB 8AA it should behave very much like a stock Surge.

This is a combination that would seem to fit BrightNorm's preference for using alkalines and getting good run time with good brightness. 0.55 A per cell seems to be about perfect for BrightNorm for AA Alkaline drains.

I think I bought one of these 4.8 V 1.1 A W/A01307 bulbs today packaged as a UKE 6.6 V 4C bulb. (I suspect the marketing guys multiplied 6 volts by 1.1 A to get 6.6 V.)I was willing to pay almost $8 to test one out before placing my larger order.

I'm pleased with this bulb in a DB 8AA serial / parallel with alkalines. It's much whiter and brighter than the stock 5.5 V 0.70 A bulb. -- both with new batteries. Being overdriven vs being underdriven makes a big difference in whiteness. I'll compare it to my Surge tonight. I'll also run it with NiMH's in both a serial DB 4AAA and a serial DB 4AA to see how it compares against the 4.2 V 0.70 bulb in that configuration.
