MN21 vs. P91 = very close race.

I just got an M6, and took it on a walk in the dark.

I had the HOLA installed on fresh primaries.

Also, My P91 on top of 2x18650,

I must say that the MN21 is the winner, BUT JUST BARELY!!

There was a different beam pattern between them, and it seemed (to my eyes) that they were putting out just about the same amount of overall light.

The M6 had more throw, and was VERY AWSOME, but the lego spread the light all around in a very pleasing cone.

The difference was noticeable, but I was expecting alot more out of the HOLA, or maybe I was just underestimating the power of the P91 on the Li ions.

All in All, it was a very fun walk! :D

your observations make perfect sense, and is why I always recommend taking dramatic steps upwards in brightness when someone asks about a brighter light. By my estimates the P91 is somewhere around 360 torch lumens on fresh 18650s, while the MN21 on primaries is probably around 550-650 torch lumens... A doubling in output will only appear as a "step" brighter. Light output has to be about 4X for it to appear as "double."

DrK, I am thinking that the MN21 is at least 3X brighter than the P91. Maybe throw is comparable but not overall light. The P91 is bright and does fairly well with two 18650's, and would certainly be cheaper to run than the MN21.

Yeah mdocod, what you said about logrithmic increases makes sense now that I think about it.

It was still fun comparing the two torches.

+1 something went wrong in that comparison. only I move to say the MN21 is twice, not three times, as bright as the P91 on two 18650's.

I used my P91 with two 18650's and noticed that the output degraded over time, now it is is not much brighter than a P90 on two 18650's, which incidentally is really bright. I think the P91 is not too robust, and really needs 3X CR123 for longevity. But that is off track, so is it?

360 to 215 lumens for the P91 on two 18650´s, lets take an average of 290 lumens.

And as per SF underrated average lumens on the M6-MN21 combo, 500 lumens, but I´ve heard Jim say that output at start of run is closer to 630-650 lumens.

And then I´ve made a comparison between my brother´s P91 on 18650´s and my M6 with 123´s, and it does look twice as bright, but a totally different beam pattern. The P91 will never have as much throw, or the MN21 as much flood.

That was all I was really getting at.

To paraphrase my point.

It seemed if the beam of the P91 beam profile were compressed down to the size/shape of the m6 HOLA, it would be a very close comparison (via the human eye/brain).

Basically the MN16 LA + turbo head on 2 18650s would be very similar to the human eye. Correct?

I wouldn't know the answer to that question, unless the MN16 and P91 have the same lamp.

Well, I took another walk tonight, and took some real time doing "deliberate" comparisons as opposed to just casual observations, and I must change my theory to say that it doesn't seem as close of a "race" as last night.

HOLA was very clearly brighter to my Eyes/Brain.

:shrug: Who knows? maybe my Eye/Brain/Flashlight connection wasn't as good yesterday as it is today.

I know what you mean, it is hard to judge which light is brighter under certain conditions sometimes.

BTW: The MN16 is basically the P91 for a turbo head (M3T), it claims 225 lumens for 20 minutes. So it would give a tighter spot and rounder beam.
