Hey all. I'm building a 4D Mag with an XM-L for a friend. He's not an enthusiast but he likes the lights I've built so he'll likely use alkaline cells. I ruled out 8xAMC7135 boards because he would be relegated to using the 30% medium mode [which is not as bright as his stock Maglite 3D Cree]. High mode would draw ~2.8A from the battery which would kill alkaline D cells in less than 25 minutes :ironic: (according to SilverFox). Conversely, high mode with 6xAMC would be an OK compromise, but medium and low would become even less useful.

I found these 1A buck drivers from IllluminationSupply.

Wired in parallel they would deliver ~2A to the emitter and since it is a buck driver it could [hopefully] take advantage of extra voltage provided by 5 C cells instead of dissipating it as waste heat (unlike a AMC7135-based linear regulator).

Is there a direct drive PWM-controller mode board with which I could retrofit my 2x1000mA buck driver solution for dimming modes? HKJ mentions and shows pictures of some in his driver thread but I can't find any from googling. Any ideas?

Thanks!

Bumpity.

If I simply desolder all the AMC7135 chips from a linear regulator board (of the 5 mode group variety), wire the board in series after the buck driver, could I use the attiny13 microcontroller for PWM modes?
