So i got my modded Arc AAA today, and my first thought was "Wow! This is small!"

My next thought was "Hmm. Could it be smaller?"

Then i remembered the N-cells i had from my attempted mod to a Soiltaire. Hmm. Could it be...? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thinking.gif Well, Larry did it, why can't i? (Uhh, right. Larry = /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/bowdown.gif )

So here are my pics. Can anyone dare to mod the light like so?

- Cut down the battery tube in the same way Roth cuts down Minimags. This would need to be done from the front, since the rear is solid.
- Bore out the tube a wee bit to accept an N-cell (peeled or unpeeled i don't care)
- Thread the tube... ta-da! A much smaller light!

Here are the pics. Let me know if they don't work for you.

What say you, modders? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/naughty.gif

Well that's the great thing about CPF, you think of an idea and it has already been done!

I can't find the thread right now, but the original Arc AAA threads could not be used due to the diameter of the N cell.

Hi Mark,

Thanks for the compliments. First bad news is you cant "peel" an N- same construction as other alkalines- OD is + polarity /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif . The one I did (and still carry) was a custom thread at about 31/64" major diameter, leaving a "wall" thickness of next to nothing! For the NLS (same 1/2" OD) I used a semi standard 15/32 tap, and "bored" most of the thread away with a 29/64" endmill, leaving about 10% thread engagement (which amazingly seems to work OK). The biggest hassle with the AAA is the threads have to be turned off the head and a "sleeve" pressed over where they were. Then the sleeve has to be threaded. There aint a lot of "wall" to work with. It's doable, but a bit of a PITA.

i'm glad you said that about turning the threads off the head larry, i was thinking the exact same thing!

The polarity in the plug is not the biggest problem. It can be reverted if people specificly order a special Arc AAA mod. But I don't think a regular N-cell can go through the threaded portion even if it's peeled bare. With proper tools, it would be possible to "thin-out" the thread a little so that the bare cell can go through...
