I am completely new to this - so bear with me.....

I have a petzl Duo languishing in a drawer. It has the 5LED flood conversion already, which I really liked, but has the halogen spot light, which I didnt because of the very short battery life and bulb life - it went phut once when I really wanted the reach (it currently runs on AAs).

A thought struck me....could I mod it with a 900Lumen LED to replace the halogen? If I can....whats involved? I am confident enough to hack about with the reflector and bulb mounts, but need to know what driver/heatsink/LED people would suggest?

I currently run a Myo XP and would like the DUO to be a much brighter addition/alternative

I don't know what the '5led flood conversion' means.
re: halogen to led - is it possible? surely. Hard to give instructions having no idea whats inside of it.
As its a plastic case, you'll need to establish a thermal path, a means of transferring heat from the emitter to a surface that will radiate into the air. This could be a copper heat duct (strands of heavy-gage copper wire suffice). Alternatively, if you're going to wear it against skin (and not on a toque or cap) for greater efficiency you could have it touch your forehead if you're willing to take in the heat). But that plastic case is an enclosure and enclosing isn't great for heat transfer.

Emitter type - field is wide open. Most efficient is xpg. furthest range can come from xpe / xre. I strongly suggest you think about getting a neutral to warm tint if you're ever going to wear it for any outdoor recreation. Some people find the ssc p4 has an excellent smooth beam.

You may get lucky with stock reflector, but it may not work with your emitter. Reflectors are a bit more efficient but may take up more depth to get something that'll throw a decent distance (short ones are floody). An optic could be smaller giving you more room for driver + heatsink. IMHO optics can provide optimal beam, a concentrated center that gradually transitions towards the sides, very comfortable after hours of use while reflectors eventually cause tunnel vision.

I'd suggests a driver, if you have room. Gives you output options and makes the full charge not a worry.

g'luck
