Direct Drive Triple XPG R5

Warnings:

  • This light creates excessive heat
  • This light may cause eye damage
  • This light will burn the skin at close range.
  • This light may cause combustibles to ignite
  • This drop-in is a direct drive unit.
  • IMR cells are not recommended.
  • [/FONT]

NOTE: all output #s are based on data from HERE
(Output #s are stated at the emitters, I do not have any way to test OTF lumens)

This will draw about 5+ amps from a fresh AW 18650 2600mAh cell
This calculates out to about 1400 Lumens

This will draw about 6+ amps from a fresh AW 18650 IMR cell
This calculates out to over 1500 Lumens

THE USE OF BATTERIES LARGER THAN 18650 MAY CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE LEDS

This Drop-in is a Direct Drive unit. It should only be run from a single 18650 cell at 4.2 Volts or less.

IMR BATTERIES MAY CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE LEDS

I have been running a prototype with an AW IMR 18650 to test the durability and performance.
This test unit has been through at least 30 full battery cycles.
Junction Temp never exceeds 65C (150F) in a handheld C2 host.
This equates to over 90% of the rated flux at the max measured operating temp.

We recommend the use of Deoxit on all electrical contact points to maximize performance.
Mclicky tail switch has shown excellent performance at these high current levels.

This Drop-in is not a "thrower" the beam is wider than the triple XPE units.
However, the output is great enough, that the lux is about 20% higher than a Malkoff M60, and the hotspot is huge.

ADDED 2-4-10
RUNTIME INFO:

AW 18650 2600mAh cell
30 minutes to 3.68V
Current draw at end of run = 3.62A
So, basically, when you get down to about 1200 lumens, it's time to recharge your battery.

This Drop-in can be run from a SINGLE cr123 for approx 20 lumen output tapering off for a few hours.

More details to follow.

Re: Moddoo Triple XP-G R5 P60 Drop-in: production begins

Are the Direct Drive Triple XPG R5 ready for order as well? If so I would like to order one now. What is the procedure? Thanks in advance.

Re: Moddoo Direct Drive Triple XP-G R5 P60 Drop-in: production begins

Have you had any issues with the IMR current draw and the McClicky tailswitch? I thought the max rating of the McClicky was 6 amps. What is your longest runtime before your hand says 'no mas' to the heat? What is your experience using a FM 'C' Host with this drop-in?

More importantly, when is the buy list going to be extended and how do I move up the chain?

I sure wish I looked into these drop-ins sooner. Fantastic piece of technology.

Re: Moddoo Direct Drive Triple XP-G R5 P60 Drop-in: production begins

My interest is more in a 3-level with mode memory like the XP-E. Direct drive, the more I think about it, does sound interesting.

Gone already?
AAhhhhhhhhhhggg......!!!!!

How did I miss the sign up list for this? Why not just change the title of the thread to too bad you missed out because it is apparently closed already?

I kept reading about a quad drop-in but did not see anything about a direct drive high output tripple.

Looks like I just squeaked in at the end of the list :D.

I'm going to pretend this thread doesn't exist.:mecry:

This drop in is a very fine example of industrial art.:thumbsup::thumbsup:

Don't worry about me though, I'll be fine:mecry:

I have been beating the crap out of the mclicky switches for some time. They have not faltered even past 7.5A
The design is very robust.
We recommend 6A max to be safe.

I kept reading about a quad drop-in but did not see anything about a direct drive high output tripple.

We started the thread to make questions and answers accessible to all of the potential owners.

I decided to make these direct drive to use the full potential of the overbuilt chassis.

I wish I could make 1000 more of these, but they are too time consuming.
When the current stock of parts runs out, they will be gone.

Awesome
Moddoo that is a most enticing list of warnings:devil: To me it reads, "Hey user, do you know enough to handle this?"

Impressive numbers on the AW's.
Very few 18650's could put those up. How do the 'old' AW 18650 (non-p) perform? And if anyone wants a 2nd lower output stage, just swap in a cheapfire cell and current should drop to 1.4A

Which vendor did you purchase your mcclickys from? I need to order some from there

Good to know about the McClicky.

Btw, what do you mean by when the current stock runs out they will be gone? Do you mean that you are no longer going to be using this fantastic heatsink form factor for anymore modules or just these XP-G R5's? I'm almost afraid to hear the answer.

I think this product will be the envy of many CPF users for a good long while.

Looks amazing! Can't wait to get one of these in a 6P and light up the night! Great job Moddoo :twothumbs

Sorry, don't mean to trick you. This is a continuation of the XP-E Triple thread begun in September.
In that thread, requests were made for an XPG version. Folks have been requesting reservations since then.

I guess I'll have to wait until a multi-level version is offered
This is the XPG Triple. There will only be one model for this set. No drivers are available, so no regulation and no built in level controls. I will send out confirmation PMs this weekend. Each reservation holder may purchase or withdraw.

what do you mean by when the current stock runs out they will be gone?

We still hope to produce Triples and Quads in greater numbers, but this is the last set of hand wired Triples.
There will be only 30. XPG reservations lower then 30 will not qualify for one from this set unless someone in top 30 withdraws. If #25 were to withdraw, for example, 30 becomes 29 and 31 becomes 30, etc.

We will not be producing further sets until and unless we're able to achieve larger scale production (not hand wired).

Do you still have any upgrade clicky kits for self installation?
Back in stock, here

Extra McClicky's are available by request, in any quantity. Just send me a PM.

I didn't want one of these low output tripples anyway.:ohgeez:
