Sold/Expired Moddoo Drop-ins: Triple CREE XP-E

Candle Power Flashlight Forum

Help Support CPF:

Picked up at the post office today (missed picking it up on weekend).

6P HAIII - WOW

Triple XPE R2 WH - similar WOW - I have the first round in warm & love that one.

Great job on shipping / packaging - Z58 was loosened as requested & batteries and extra lens - great job!! Worth the wait!

I just got mine today. Very nice!

I have a question though- Its supposed to be a three mode, and says so on the label, but I can't get it to change modes. I'm using it in the bored out C2 with a McClicky.

Hi Electronguru, I can't decide between bored 6P and the tanklight. do you have any data regarding the runtime of Moddoo's XP-E or XP-G drop ins on 18650 and 26500? Also, can you put me on the XP-G waiting list?
Thanks

Hi Electronguru,

could you please answer on this one? Also, did you put me on the triple XPG list?

Thanks

From my testing,
The AW 18650 2600 cell will provide about 70 minutes of output until the cell reaches about 3.5V

Electronguru tested the IMR 26650:
(45 minutes of full power + gradual dim) on 1xIMR26500

The IMR cells will give you more runtime at full power than a regular Li-ion.
The Li-ion cells will slowly fade during most of the runtime, but it can be hard to notice with that much output.

Hello there,

I know that the ‘quad’ is still in R&D, but I’ve been thinking about possible cell configurations from a standpoint of a ‘user’ (such as, say, me, for example :naughty🙂, and I think that the ‘quad’ would be perfect if it was dedicated for 2x LiIon instead of 1x LiIon like the ‘triple’. Here’s my thinking:

‘Quad’ configured for 1x LiIon:
  • Must be in 18mm 6P/C2, not very practical for 9P/C3 (requiring a spacer)
  • Must use 1x18650 or 1xIMR – either way, runtime on ‘high’ is relatively short
  • Essentially incompatible with 2x CR123
‘Quad’ configured for 2x LiIon:
  • Perfect for an 18mm 9P/C3 – running at 7.4v, the lower drain rate would also be kinder on the cells
  • Can still be used in 6P/C2 with 2x IMR123 if desired (although runtimes would be very short in this configuration)
  • Might still be used in 18mm 6P/C2 w/ 1x18650 for somewhat-reduced output & direct drive
  • Could even be used in an unbored 17mm host (2x17670 or even 2x17500 w/ reduced performance??)
  • Can be used in 2x18650 bodies for greatly-increased runtime :twothumbs
  • Fantastic utility on 3x CR123 for backup – many here like the ability to use primaries. Perfect voltage matchup, also the drain rate at the higher voltage would be within safe limits for the Li primaries.
The SF C3’s are very popular on CPF – this lets folks have a choice: Two-cell SF, use a 'triple'. Three-cell SF (or even the 4-cell Leef/FM's), use a 'quad'. Otherwise, many hosts are "left out in the cold", and folks will have to choose between the two units for their 6P/C2’s. In my particular situation, if the quad was available for 7.4v, I would buy a 'quad' for my C3 and perhaps a 'triple' for my 6P. Otherwise, I’d probably just buy a 'quad' for my 6P and keep the Malkoff M60 in my C3 as a backup – I do love 1x LiIon configurations, but also find 2x LiIon very handy as well.

Looking at it another way: if folks already have the triple (w/ 1xLiIon), they may or may not purchase a quad when it’s available – it’s just an upgrade for their current host. However, if the quad comes out for 2x LiIon, then folks may want to have both – especially since it would add the ability to run 3x CR123 as backup in their longer 3-cell light (if they have one).

In fairness, I must mention the one negative aspect of this strategy, 1x18650 is becoming the most popular configuration around here, and a 7.4v 'quad' would not be optimum on 1x18650. However, running on direct-drive from 1x18650, it may still outperform the ‘triple’ with this configuration. At any rate, even an XP-G 'triple' will still outperform just about anything else that can fit into a SF 6P/C2.

Anyway, just an idea – naturally I do not know about the nuts & bolts of the engineering considerations for this module, and I'm sure you folks are doing a great job on that. However, I at least wanted to throw my thoughts out here for public view,

K

Will there be any more 700 lumen heads available in the future?

While reservations for XPE Triples are closed, we hope to produce a few extra. These would be offered on a first come, first serve basis in this thread, accompanied by a "now available" post.

I think that the ‘quad’ would be perfect if it was dedicated for 2x LiIon instead of 1x LiIon like the ‘triple’.

Time and parts permitting, we hope to produce two versions of the Quad, one for one cell and one for two cell operation. The one cell would work with 1xC, 1x18500, and 1x18650 hosts. The two cell version would work with 2xC and 2x18500 hosts. But the main goal remains production.

when can we buy the triple XP-G drop in ?

Triple (and Quad) production is currently hobbled by the complexities of running so many high powered LEDs in such a tight space. This reduces our ability to use off the shelf parts. The result is that each one must be hand wired, a painstaking process that, among other things, limits the number that can be made. Combined with their popularity, these are in very short supply.

To combat this, we are looking into having our own boards made, reducing production time and increasing supply. Getting there will take more time and investment, but we hope it will be worth it. In the mean time, we continue pushing forward on other projects, large and small, some known and a few, surprises.

It is my hope to enter larger scale production of Triple or Quads (if not both) in 3-5 months. We will work to offer smaller hand made batches (including XPGs) in the mean time. But not before the last batch of promised XPEs is done.

Dan we know you & Moddoo have a lot of irons in the fire, thx. for taking the time for a thorough update & explanation of what's going on re. the triples/quads.

The result is that each one must be hand wired, a painstaking process that,

I'm just here to point out that in this case hand assembled is an excellent attribute. In some instances the reliability of 'automated' processes may sound appealing, but the precision of the Moddoo machine is awe inspiring. These are flawless pieces of art, that work.lovecpf

Everything you all do is well worth the wait. I am very impressed with my bodies I just got back. Excellent work on everything.

I am really looking forward to this in my C2. I will also need an UCL lens for this setup. Hopefully this batch is still a few weeks out so my funds get built up a little.
Thanks,
Zach
