Hi,

I modified my small 0.5W 4AA Lantern by inserting a Rebel LED (unfortunately only 80 Bin) and a heatsink inside the lantern. I usually only need light in one direction and this mod works fine to me.

The only things that I did was to remove the old LED, its fitting/reflector and contacts. I covered the two upright posts with heatshrink (battery power goes to the circuit board from bottom to top). I inserted the Rebel on the heatsink and soldered it to the current circuit board and there was light.

I have not done any current measurements nor runtime tests (still on first set of batteries and it does not get used very often). I am very pleased with the improved brightness and light patern.

I have some photos to share, but cannot post any attachments????

Good job on the mod.

A nice steady 50 long running lumens with better tint than the original led.
I like the idea of the lantern projecting all it's light through 180 degrees only.

Tks LumenHound

Here are some comparison shots with a tube lantern that I received from a friend a few years ago:

The Rebel Mod is much smaller and less power hungry. The tube lantern gives a better close lighting patern. Both photos taken @ 0"3 sec, F4.5 and 1600 ASA
