What kind of power regulation(if any) is found in the cheap "ebay" lasers (this one specifically)

Would it be safe to take the brass can out of one of these, thermal epoxy it into an aluminum heatsink, and then run it on a RCR123(4.2Vmax)?

Should I tie in a converter board from the shoppe somewhere?

Rechargeable batteries suggest lots of run time. These hopped up pointers will live a short life time when driven at these levels without a break. They're best to be flashed briefly perhaps a few seconds at a time at high levels with rest in between. If the beam is bright and dims or gets fatter within a few seconds STOP! You are killing the laser!

If you really need long run times at class IIIb levels you may want to invest in a handheld like the cni models.
