MR Bulk Meets Mr. GLOW -- Pictures

Thanks to Mr. GLOW (Doug S.) I am the happy experimenter in a new world of totally UN-powered light! After brief exposure to strong light this Nichia Grade 8 blue-green stuff simply luminesces all by itself for a long and bright time.

Here's a 3/4-inch by 1/2-inch piece of paper coated with it (photos taken in pitch black darkness):

And here is the same piece illuminating (kinda) some fine print several inches away:

Although the camera couldn't pick up on the low light level, my adjusted eyes could actually read the print.

So am I now a "luminesce-aholic"?

I'ts down hill from here for you. It is very addictive ain't it? I have the Nichia and the later one and the yellow/green on the way. Hard to belive one can read with just a business size card of glow powder.

Glad you find those interesting, -thanks for posting a pic.
Some people refer to these as "light storage materials" -kinda like a chemical capacitor

Unfortunately, no commercially available products work anywhere near as well as this D.I.Y. (yet)

p.s.-I've mentioned it before, but if you can pick up a Royal Blue Luxeon, and power it with 3 Nimhs, you'll have a super powerful "charge-up" device for the slow charging blue/green surfaces. It'll make those glow like fire.

I want to combine this with some of the mods I have, in an area where the light will always be charging it when the light is on, yet will not be vulnerable to wear from handling...

A clear lacquer coating will give a hard, durable surface that will last for years, and will be cleanable.

Perhaps this is different...and I am about to start a post in which I will be informed by the experts of CPF on luminescent devices (Hint hint Mr.Glow)

But I have some glow tape (cheap stuff, but it works I guess) under the lens of my Energizer Folding LED, and then I also have it around the head of my Norcids, inside the lip just above the lens...seems to work well, doesn't seem to affect beam quality.

Saaby-you might try 2 thin strips of AlienSkin behind those 2 LED tubes-if you're not up to using a paint. (or even strontium-based glow sheeting-which can be used just like tape). Works great-Strontium based materials really like to be charged up by white LEDs.

Oh, you can see how I did that by looking here

Energizer

The real question is how to get some glowy material on my FRS radios...I've started my own topic on that though

Speaking of glow stuff, whatever happened with the buy of different colors of glow powder? I missed the buy, but am interested to know if there have been any tests and results of those different colors. Especially (if my memory serves), that funky, color-changing powder? Thanks for any replies.

flash-do you mean the one that's offered right now by www.readysetglo.com ? (this months spl.-$9.95 oz)?

I haven't seen any other ones-have you??

The readysetglo people also have that intriguing RED pigment in sml. quantities-though they say it has only a 1/2 hour glow duration.

Mr. Glow: Yes, that's the one. Do you know if anyone has tried it (or any of the colors?)

Haven't tried readysetglo yet-since I'm all out

of 2 kinds -might give 'em a try.
Low $10. an ounce price for that "trick" color-changing stuff makes me not expect too much from it though..

Mr. Dimmer,-keep posting at this rate while some of us wager how long it'll be till you catch up with Craig

I've got to get them in now, before Craig gets the new machine set up. He's be *smokin*!

The smart bets have me driving off a cliff (post-wise, and yes I stole the phrase from Ryan) in late July. You know how I keep saying I'm going to stop posting when I travel, but then I keep finding a way to continue? Well, that simply can't happen this time. Ain't no way. I'll be going cold turkey for up to a month. I'll probably be all quivery when I return...

Geez and I am wondering how I'll manage a week at scout camp...a whole month!? Get a internet enabled cell phone or something and I'll keep you posted
wink.gif
there's always the fail-proof (but certainly not fool-proof) combo of laptop, solar cells, and satelite phone...somewhat expensive to keep in touch though, I mean think of all the money that you wouldn't be able to spend on lights?

Where ya goin'?

Money? Oh yeah. That's the other thing I won't have anymore. I'm China-bound.

Say, I'm not taking this thread off-topic in any way, am I?

Wait...what was it about? Maybe I shouldn't encourage you
