Not sure if anyone else noticed these. but Wall-Mart has had on their shelf for awhile now, a pair of "auxiliary" driving lights that are nothing more than metal cans on a 90 degree mount with a ceramic bi-pin socket in the base. They come with some typical off the shelf 12V 50W long-life MR-16s in them, some wire, and a rocker switch for install...
Out of the box they are probably total junk for any useful auxiliary lighting, however, for ~$12 they would probably make great units for upgraded bulbs. A pair of 12V 100W 50hr MR-16s would go a long way. Ordering the bulbs online would actually more than double the cost of the whole project but regardless, the lumen/dollar and the flexibility of a standard bi-pin base for MR-16s does open up a lot of options.
I'm thinking I'll put a pair on the rear bumper of my SUV one of these days
Or maybe slap a few in a "row" across the roof line up front.
maybe both, muahahaha
