Today I received a McLuxIII PD HA Nat, courtesy of CPF member fnmag. Wow, what a light, this really is a piece of art! It has a glow ring, titan bezel and trit in the piston.

I have a few questions, I'm hoping someone can answer for me...

1) I don't know why but I thought there would be more travel in the piston. The travel can only be measured in millimeters, but I'm sure this is normal and I just had a false impression in my head? When the piston is depressed, is the light still waterproof?

2) The o-ring on the piston looks a bit worn out and I want to lube it with the right stuff. Some people mention plumber's grease. They sell this at a local home depot http://www.rectorseal.com/index.php?site_id=1&product_id=227 but I'm not sure if will work. Its a red o-ring if that matters.

3) What is the expected runtime on low? I've found many details for runtime on high (1 1/2 hours?) but nothing for low.

4) It seems this light and the HDS lights use the same screws. Where would I find a tool to fit this type screw?

Anything else a new McGizmo owner should be aware of?

Thanks!

If I understand you correctly, the distance of piston travel as momentary on/off depend on how far down you screw the bezel into the body...mines much more than "a few millimeters" to activate momentary light provided I leave at least one full turn before constant on.

water usually enters the light through the o-ringed area if the user twists the bezel under water, pushing on it shouldn't result in water entry

if you take the piston out of the body, you will notice a depression machined onto the piston in the rear, allowing the o-rings to sit on the piston. If this area is lubed very well, I see no reason for water entry.

hope this helps and congrats!

First of all, congrats on the PD! This was my first McLight as well and it is still my favorite. I thought the same as you in regards to the piston action, the good news it sounds like it's working correctly. If you feel like the piston o-ring is a little worn, send me a PM with you shipping info and I'll send you a new one that will have plenty of lube on it.

To answer your other question, yes it will maintain it's seal integrity underwater with the piston depressed. I'll let others chime in with answers to your other questions, although it wouldn't hurt to check out the FAQ section of the McGizmo lights(lots of great reading there).

Runtime in low is about 40 hours. This was with the LuxIII version and shoudl be similar with the current LEDs.

Thanks for the replies and the warm welcome! I will order some Krytox 50/50 from the sandwich shop to lube up the threads.

TxTM, that is VERY nice of you to offer to send an o-ring and I really appreciate your kindness. I'm thinking I might as well save you the trouble, if I'm placing an order from the sandwich shop anyway, I could just get the o-ring there, and I could replace the other one while I'm at it. My o-rings are red and the ones at sandwich are black. Anyone know the difference? And what size I should use?

Also, do they sell the tool for these tiny screws at sandwich?

Thanks again for the nice responses! I feel like I'm in the "club" now :).

EDIT: I just found the red o-rings at sandwich. Sorry, they were on the next page. I guess I should get the "Silicon 16 O-ring for PD". It looks like the ring around the head is a larger size. Maybe the silicon 16 for the pd and the 17 (in red) or 18 (in black) for the head?

The black o-rings from the shoppe are EPDM, the red/orange ones are silicon. If you're going to replace the piston o-ring, step up to the #16 silicon o-ring. It makes the action a little stiffer but also steps up the water proofness. My offer stands on the o-ring, I have plenty of the silicon ones.

I really can't get over how nice people are here at CPF. Thanks again TxTroubleMaker, you are so generous! I'll PM you my address for the o-ring. What about the head? Do people usually use #17 or #18?

Sandwich shop also has this "O-ring for McLux head". That seems pretty obvious...but is my MyLux III PD, an "original McLux head"?

I'm really sorry for the stupid newbie questions here!!

I sent you a PM with some helpful info. I'll send you an o-ring for the piston and for the head as well.:)

Please post that head size here. I, as I'm sure others, would like to know the size as well. In fact, it would be interesting to know all of the different o-ring sizes for all the different McGizmo lights. Anybody up for that project? Maybe a new thread...

This is from a similar thread discussing o-ring sizes, maybe Bernie can step in and ad any missing lights...

O-rings:
XR-19 Head:
Window seal - #019 EPDM (or the GID silicone)
Head to pak seal - #017 Silicone (red)

C pak:
Boot Seal O-ring - #016 Silicone (red)
Boot & Seal Retaining O-ring - #113 EPDM

XR27 & S27 Head:

Window Seal O-ring - 2 x 22 mm Buna (Nitrile)
Window retaining O-ring - #025 EPDM
Head to pak Seal - #017 Silicone (red)

27LT & 27LT-S head:

Window Seal - #023 EPDM
2x head to Pak seal - #017 Silicone

PD Piston:
Piston to sleeve seal - #015 Silicone (use #016 for added protection but stiffer activation)

PD head:

Window Seal O-ring - #019 EPDM
Head to sleeve seal O-ring - #017 Silicone

Hey, congrats on your PD!! I just got my first McGizmo light recently too; and it is a PD too.

Im surprised after so long in the advancements of technology the McluxIII-PD stands its ground pretty good on high against a fenix P1-CE [using a 7090 XR-E CREE], as I can see no difference in brightness while white wall hunting and the cree having the whiter tint
