I finished this mod a week and a half or two weeks ago and I haven't had a chance to post it until now. I was inspired by the other FT-01 cree mod I saw here, and thought I could get a better focus by moving the cree up in the reflector. I experimented with moving the reflector up and down on the stock LED. By moving the reflector up, I was able to get a nice flood pattern, just like the other mod. So, I cut a spacer out of a copper pipe cap to raise the LED up.
My brother helped me by soldering wires to the bottom of the cree (P4 bin WH tint). After I took the stock Lux III off, I discovered I had a problem. The Lux III sat in a a little aluminum cup to keep it centered. I decided to cut a scrap of the pipe cap into another spacer to fit into the hole, but I didn't have time (I was working 12 hour days 6 days a week over the holidays). My brother came to the rescue again and cut it for me.
I used AS5 and a couple dabs of super glue to attach the two spacers to the light, then used AS epoxy to attach the cree on top of them (after insulating the contacts with a thin layer of super glue). Then I soldered the wires onto the light engine and insulated the top contacts with a layer of AS epoxy then a layer of super glue.
I put it all back together and it works, but the emitter isn't centered perfectly (although the beam seems fine).
The hot spot is bigger and maybe a little less intense. The spill is much brighter. Over all, a much more useful light for me in general. I love the warmer tint, especially outside.
I'll try to do some outdoor shots later.
