Right, so as I sit here typing this by the light of my Multi Mode MiniMag LED on 25%, I realize how far into flasholicisim I've fallen because I literally can't get any sleep until I ask you, my brothers and sisters, to help me with this decision: EX10 or Quark AA? Let me explain. No, it's too much to explain, let me sum up...

My first foray into this world was with a bright and shiny new LD20+. I had never before, nor thought that I would ever, pay $60 for a flashlight until that moment. Unfortunately, it was twitchy, switching between low and turbo when I put on the red filter, and then shutting off for twenty to thirty minutes at a time. I...was...upset.:banghead: I'm in the military, and the idea of an unreliable light makes me shudder. Now, from all of my research and from exhaustively reading posts here at CPF, I have come to realize that every company will have an occasional QC slip up, and I realize that unreliability is rare for LD20 owners. Still, I returned it and have since stuck with my Streamlight Stylus Pro for my EDC, and my MiniMag as my duty light. I vowed never to spend that much again. But alas, it was too late, I was hooked.

Now, the present and my dilemma. This new sale at 7777, whom I am certain will soon have way too much of my money, allows me to dip my toes into the arena again without taking food out of the mouths of my children. I have it down to the EX10 R2 or the Quark AA. I am familiar with the pros and cons of each, and have seen the torture tests on-line and reviews and testimonials and so on. And yes, I know the RIGHT thing to do is just get them both , but for now I will only allow one or the other to eat away my funds.

So, what will I be using it for? Low level lighting at work and mid level lighting for walking the dog, however, I do enjoy having the fires of a blazing supernova at my command! So, Quark's seem to have better versatility with the lego effect, which will also save me money in the long run. When I want another light, I just buy the parts, even an 18650 option. And while the beamshots and testing I've seen clearly shows that the Quark has more throw, which I like, it doesn't have the runtime of the EX10, and it has that frakkin' pre-flash issue. I could just go with the Quark 123, but a bezel down carry is a big plus for me, as is the option to reverse or remove the clip. The EX10 uses cr123, which I have no issue with, but it seems as though this light needs more than the usual TLC out of the box, with breaking in the o-rings and making sure they're always lubed and the amount of pressure needed to turn on the light. I know the clip is deeper, but do I really want a light that may decide not to work because I didn't kiss it this morning?

Look, I know we all love our lights, and don't mean to offend anyone who hasn't had the above mentioned issues with their Quark AA or EX10. But the two lights I have now are very reliable, and I want that level of reliability from my next light. In the end, that's what's the most important to me. So please, can you help this noob out with some wisdom, advice, dirtylimericks, ANYTHING that would help to make this choice easier?:help:

My D10 has worked perfect from day one (breaking in o-rings ??) I've dropped it, it's been stored in a hot car, a cold car, and used in the rain. The only thing I ever did was put batteries in it. (now that I said all this I hope murphys law doesn't kick in).

IMHO lego type flashlights don't save you any money, you always end up spending it on something.

The other benefits of the D10 (& EX10) are the compact size and silent operation of the piston drive. When I am using my flashlight in the morning a standard clicky sounds like a canon.

Just out of curiosity, why are you looking to get a Quark in AA but a Nitecore in cr123?

doesnt matter which you buy, 3 seconds after sending paypal you will be looking for another one.

until you have about 10 good lights in your life you will continue to think about which is next.

I just can't stand the idea of the clip being attached to the head for bezel up carry, or not attached at all. Quark 123 has that issue. And thank you, everyone. for responding.

My vote goes to the EX10. The sale at 4Sevens makes it VERY affordable, even more so than the Quark and I love the PD system, frankly (I've been using a D10.) Other than that, the Quark is a pretty sweet light.

I think that it doesn't really matter which light you go for, since both of them are very well regarded here on CPF. You'll be happy with your purchase.

I have Q123 (Tactical Neutral) and EX10 R2 and like both.

They are very similar quality wise. Depending on how hard you treat them, the Q123 is probably more reliable. The EX10's were built with extreme tolerances, thin walls (to make the piston work), the walls are also extremely thin where the threads are and some people have broken the threads off, and an okay bezel ring (there are threads where people have broken the bezel ring).

Also, 4sevens will stand behind the reliability of his lights. He probably stands behind Nitecore EX10 R2's, too but only based on his policies.

From reading your OP, I think you will have a warmer and fuzzier feeling from the Quark.

Good luck on your choice and welcome to cpf. :)

I went with the D10. With a 14500 Li-ion it's just as bright as the EX10 and it has the option of using standard AA size batteries.

:welcome:

+1 on the above, my EX10 threads have broken at the head. So i immediately ordered ANOTHER from 4sevens while at the same time contacting Nitecore directly. Kelvin (from Nitecore) has been most helpful, he has expressed deep concern about the threads breaking at the head and we're working out a solution now as i wasnt quite clear what they were trying to get at.

In any event, another solution they offered was that i can ship back the light to them and they would take care of it and ship it back to me but i would have to pay USD$6 to cover the shipping (which sounds very fair to me).

So, go get a nitecore, i love that little light, the clip is GREAT! virtually instant switching from min-max. Only thing is, certain RCR123s are too long to fit in the EX10, i am using Soshine unprotected RCR123s from DX and they work fine.

Sorry for the off-topic but do we have any 5-fingered CPF'ers here? (he asked innocently hoping no moderator shakes an admonitory finger)

Boy, Mandy got big after that role, though! I guess the fencing keeps your weight down. :D You know the guy who did the fencing choreography is the same guy who did the lightsaber choreography for Star Wars, and for The Mask of Zorro! I think he trained Eril Flynn too. Anyway, I decided on a Quark AA2 R2 regular. For like $2 more you get more than twice the run time in the lower to mid ranges. Ordered it today, and already I can't wait to get a hold of that 18650 body and batteries! What have I become...:shakehead
