I love my new Longbow Micra. I bought it with a twisty. Now for my perfect light. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/bowdown.gif I would like to have a clickie, booster head and a 3W pill to DROP in it. I think that would be a perfect light for me! What do you think my chances of getting all that are, and when? Any opinions? (Of course my perfect, perfect light is my ARC AAA modded with a luxeon star) /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/buttrock.gif

... Then get an Eco tube and you'll have two lights. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I wonder how LB makes the 3W substantially different than the 1W version. If they chose to run the 3W real hard at the sacrifice of runtime i'd probably grab one. I don't know if that is practical for a production light since most companys do not want their products to run HOT and lose runtime efficiency etc. I would also like to see a KL1 type circuit that allows for a 1x123 config up to 3x123 for long runtime.

Just 1W?

Wow, 1W? How did they get it to be almost as bright as my 3W MadMax?

Re: Just 1W?

The 3W LEDs have been rather weak so far. LongBow is already using premium 1W LEDs, whose performance is around 90% of the 3W. The margin of improvement is so small at this stage that it cannot clearly justify doing a 3W. It remains to be seen if the 3W will improve in performance (as it did with the 1W) as Lumileds ramps up production of this item. At present, the 1Ws we have can easily catch up and match 3W performance with a little overdriving. For the 3W to really shine, LongBow has to drive it at insane levels, which re-introduces the problem of heat.

Hope that helps,

Re: Just 1W?

Haven't heard much on the MAX, besides the fact that it will launch in Q3 of this year and will be their premium model. I would assume that it will be a 5W model, but I'll see what I can dig up.

RE- Longbow & Overheating LED's
Not be too much of a pain but I noticed that historically, the Longbow was designed with divers in mind as a primary niche end-user market. Please correct me if I'm wrong in this. The statement is relevant to the over-heating 'head' issue because it diminishes it's relevance -given the assumed target market. That may explain (Just a hunch really) why they print a warning on the front bezel- To guard against liability from claims in a market other that the target market.? If so, its a very clever strategy. They can then make the heads as hot as they like (up to a point). Under water at 50ºf and less, any Longbow is really being properly cooled in it's intended environment. even cavers or people using them in colder climes shouldn't experience overheating. Anyone hazard to guess what percentage of Luxeon 3-Luxeon 5 flashlight users are exposing them to temperatures above 50º f ? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/icon3.gif

My Arc LS, and SF L4 have warnings on their bezels, too.
Perhaps a very clever industry-wide conspiracy /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/sssh.gif

Re: Just 1W?

At what point in thier run-time do the Longbow 1W heads get so hot that a normal person would feel "discomfort" from touching them? 1 Minute. 5 minutes, 10 Minutes or 20 Minutes?

Last night i turn on my Mirca for almost 2 hrs, it's hot but my bare hands can still hold it. The funny part is the bezel and LED head are not as hot as their body and tailcap. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif

Re: Just 1W?

Hello, fellow Micra lovers. I have not yet had the light on for 2 hours, so I cannot comment on albert's experience. But knowing that the clicky tailcap houses a rubber or plastic end button. and a plastic switch body, I am beginning to wonder how much heat these two components can tolerate.

Re: Just 1W?

I have the twistie one and can have had it on for 2 hours as well a few nights ago. It never got hot to an uncomfortable point anywhere on the body/bezel. I agree with Albert here. Great little light

Re: Just 1W?

I keep hearing so much bad stuff about 3 watts. but from my experience they have always been brighter at 500ma, and tehy also seem to run cooler when underdriven...my Sx1J on an Ill Pill Is 2x as bright as my Q2K easily, and is brighter (noticably) than both my R#J on the same type of pills also.. But from my understanding it is just cowincidence or something /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/icon3.gif

Guess I'm wrong and/or crazy...

Re: Just 1W?

luxlover: since the arc LS uses the kroll as well and has less mass than the micra, i think the micra should have no problems dealing with the heat /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
