Well, I finally bit the bullet and put out the money for a light I've been wanting for a long time. wquiles did the milling and body mods. I asked him to change the size of the grooves on the head so that they would match the grooves on the body, and he did so perfectly! I also sent him the Xcap cap because I knew he was going to have to make adjustments as it isn't as deep as stock caps. I added the crenelated bezel when it got to me. The build is #536 here: http://www.candlepowerforums.com/vb/showthread.php?t=239209&page=18
Will then sent the light to nailbender to do the SST-90 mod. Dave put in the Dflex switch, heat sink, SST-90, modded the reflector, and gave me a glass double coated lens as well. I was planning on running it with an aspheric, but after trying a couple of lenses I realized that while the hotspot was brighter, it was also much larger as the SST-90 is such a large LED. Because of this, the extra throw really was marginal, and with the loss of spill and extra weight of the lens I decided not to use it.
I've heard that using wquiles and nailbender to do a mag results in great lights. I really can't say enough about them. Both of them spent a lot of time with me to figure out exactly what I want, and the light, I feel, came out spectacular.😀 Thanks guys!!! :twothumbs
It will be interesting to see how much I use it as it is so pretty I don't want to scratch it, but at the same time it is so bright it makes my other lights look pretty week (even my direct drive SST-50 drop pushing 700 lumens, also done by nailbender). Sorry, I'm not going to be able to post beam shots as my camera doesn't seem to do those, but there are several on CPF.
I'm using a D li-ion to push the SST-90, which according to nailbender should do 1200-1400 lumens for an hour. He measured it at 1400 lumens OTF at start-up.
So, you probably want to see some pics...here they are:
