Well, I finally bit the bullet and put out the money for a light I've been wanting for a long time. wquiles did the milling and body mods. I asked him to change the size of the grooves on the head so that they would match the grooves on the body, and he did so perfectly! I also sent him the Xcap cap because I knew he was going to have to make adjustments as it isn't as deep as stock caps. I added the crenelated bezel when it got to me. The build is #536 here: http://www.candlepowerforums.com/vb/showthread.php?t=239209&page=18

Will then sent the light to nailbender to do the SST-90 mod. Dave put in the Dflex switch, heat sink, SST-90, modded the reflector, and gave me a glass double coated lens as well. I was planning on running it with an aspheric, but after trying a couple of lenses I realized that while the hotspot was brighter, it was also much larger as the SST-90 is such a large LED. Because of this, the extra throw really was marginal, and with the loss of spill and extra weight of the lens I decided not to use it.

I've heard that using wquiles and nailbender to do a mag results in great lights. I really can't say enough about them. Both of them spent a lot of time with me to figure out exactly what I want, and the light, I feel, came out spectacular.😀 Thanks guys!!! :twothumbs

It will be interesting to see how much I use it as it is so pretty I don't want to scratch it, but at the same time it is so bright it makes my other lights look pretty week (even my direct drive SST-50 drop pushing 700 lumens, also done by nailbender). Sorry, I'm not going to be able to post beam shots as my camera doesn't seem to do those, but there are several on CPF.

I'm using a D li-ion to push the SST-90, which according to nailbender should do 1200-1400 lumens for an hour. He measured it at 1400 lumens OTF at start-up.

So, you probably want to see some pics...here they are:

Very nice light! I don't really care for the pointed end, but other then that its great! 😀

How many amps is the SST-90 getting?

But the pointy end breaks glass...haha. The beauty of custom lights; each person can have them the way they like them! I'm glad you like the rest of it though. :grin2:

As far as the amps? I don't know. I'll ask Dave and then add it in the first post. Thanks for looking!

I asked Dave if he new the amps, but he said that since it was pushing 1400 lumens OTF at start and that I didn't seem to care (I don't know enough about amps n such yet), he didn't measure it. He did say however that he used 18 ga. wire and it is less than 3inches, and that he treated the switch with pro gold, so it is getting the max amps.

That is a really nice light. The bezel can be robbing as much as 20% of the lumens, but it sure looks cool.

I bet Nailbender got you with an SST-90 being pushed hard at 7A or more. For some reason he gets good current with just a single li-on or IMR cell, while others can't get close. He did a 1C Mag SST-50 for me direct drive off a single IMR C cells and it pulls 4.55A, while my other SST-50 lights not made by him can't duplicate those high current levels even when paired to 3 NiMH C cells. Maybe this proves attention to detail is rewarded with more current.

Thanks! Quite the praise for nailbender too. As far as the robbed lumens, lost lumens are from flood not throw, correct? It already has great flood, so for me the looks are a good trade off.

Very nice light, love the color.

However, it reminds me a game from long long ago.... JARTS! Anyone else remember that? I just recall what fun it was until we hit....

Anyway, great light, enjoy and don't let it be a shelf queen!!!

May I know who sells the crenelated bezel? I can't find any on sale in CPFMP. Thanks.

There are a couple places I know of. Malkoff has them instock right now here:

A couple here: http://maglitesales.com/maglitestore/index.php/manufacturers_id/21

Believe it or not, I actually think I bought mine from an online offroad place. I can find it again if you need me to.

Found it. Here: http://www.offroadtrailtools.com/shop/index.php?pg=4&l=product_list&c=42

OK, thank you. Lots of choices there.

BTW, I know the crenelation bezel is supposed to be able to break auto glass; anyone actually ever done that or seen it done? I have no doubt the tail cap can, but...

Crenelated bezels are usually meant for self-defense. you crack your attacker over the head with it, kinda like this:

:twak:

by design the tailcap you are using will make glass shatter more effectively than using the bezel.

Huh, I thought it was better to jam it in there face, kinda like this :poke:

Which then makes him look kinda like this: :sick2:

Haha. Actually, it the other end is made for breaking glass, I wonder what it would do to a skull? :naughty:
