My rexlight doesn't work!

I just got my rexlight in today and popped in an alkaline battery. It turned on right away initially and was very bright. I cycled through the modes and thought "wow, this little thing is cool!" I messed around with it for about 30 seconds the first time it turned on.

I fully depressed the switch and the light turned off. I pressed it again and it did not turn back on....at least, right away. I put it in my pocket and about 2 minutes later, I took it out and the light was on. I turned it off and tried again, but now it just won't turn on anymore no matter what I do. I tried several different fresh alkaline batteries-none worked. I separated the tubes and examined them-I saw nothing that looked out of the ordinary to me. I started searching this forums and found a post with someone having a problem similar to mine. Someone in that thread suggested that the person take sandpaper and sand the andonized edge of the battery tube. I took all three tubes and sanded each contact edge until the metal was showing and tried again-no luck. I also tried tossing that wavy washer into the light with the battery-again, absolutely nothing.

Can anyone offer any advice? This is the first good light I've ever owned and I have no idea what I'm doing wrong ;(

Is the light defective? If so should I email Kai about it? I don't want to RMA the rex and wait another 2 months to get a replacement if this problem is fixable.

Unscrew the switch end and using a short wire connect the - end of the battery to the body of the flashlight. Did it light ?

No-it didn't :(

edit: wait! yes it did! I touched the wire on the edge of the battery tube and the light flashed on and off in strobe mode.

Well I'm no expert but it would seem like your switch is bad, if it was mine I would take the switch apart and have a look see what the deal is, but not having done this I don't know how hard it is ? but should be fairly easy cause it comes with a spare switch rubber thing  .

Thanks for the advice!

I have no freaking clue how to take the switch out of the tailcap. I tried pushing it out with my finger and with the blunt end of a glasses screwdriver with no luck. It's stuck in there.

:sigh:

You can use a pair of twisters to take out the copper plate that holds the tail together. Try taking the tail apart and put everything back it and try again. The optional washer is to be placed inside the tail cap, before the copper plate. If you use a multimeter to check the tail, it should read 0 and 1 when it's on and off. The switch itself should be fine, it's probably related to conductivity issue.

Its screwed in look for two small holes either side of the spring and using a small pointy thing like a dart or a tiny screwdriver unscrew it. However once you get the switch out it looks hard to take apart not sure its worth the risk
hoping someone smarter than me will jump in this thread soon. :D

Ok-I unscrewed the copper plate and the assembly of the switch neatly fell out.

I don't have a multimeter to test the switch. Is there any other way that I can confirm that it is working or not?

Thanks for the help toocool and kaidomain :p Nice to see dealer support on these forums.

I am going to clean the parts of the switch and put everything back in place. I will post the results here.

The switch itself rarely breaks. Try include the washer into the tail cap. It sits outside of the orange silicon spacer.

That worked! The light seems to be functioning perfectly now!

edit: wait-now it's doing it again. The light switches on sometimes, but not all the time.

see if the bras ring is screwed down far enough on your switch, on mine they were loose and causing similar problems that disappeared after fastering the brass ring on the switch (the ring with the 2 holes you can turn by putting tweezers in).

There are a bunch of pieces in the switch, all the metal ones (washers, brass retaining ring) have to be making tight contact for the switch to work. One Rexlight I got had the switch boot at the bottom hanging out and it would not function until I reassembled the switch tightly. the switch is not as simple as say a Jetbeam MKIIX.

You don't have a meter? What kind of flashaholic are you anyway?

I'm not a flashaholic at all. Rexlight is my first light ever :p

I have tightened down the brass ring all the way-no avail. It will only turn on sometimes. Usually, if I click the switch and it succesfully turns on and then I turn it off again, it will not turn back on for a good five minutes.

What the hell is wrong

Rub each end of the battery tube on some sandpaper to clean them of any annodizing if that's the cause. Make sure each end of the tube is securely seated on the head and cap when reassembling.

Thats what we all said when we got our 1st light
DON

That's reassuring

I already sanded the tube down

Alright, I took the switch assembly apart and put everything back in one more time...however, this time I think I tightened the brass ring too tight and now I can not get it back open! :shakehead The light still only turns on sometimes.

Could I just post this to someone who can actually fix it? I feel like an idiot-I'm sure the problem is extremely easy to fix.

well guys I did have issues with my switch. After some fast pressing and then a gentle slow one it stuck in the down, off position.

The thing happened several times and it was corrected with abrisk press. So the switch dioes stuck.

I ahd to take it apart twice, and for some yime now it works as intented. But I an uncerttain of it, and will not mess with it again...

Best of luck, kostas

I took the assembly apart again and the light continues to exhibit the same behaviors.

I'm rather frustrated :(
