I have been purchasing a lot of LED flashlights and head lamps on the recommendations of CandlePower Forums members for the past 3 years and I have purchased a box full of flashlights and headlamps that my wife just doesn't understand. But this hasn't stopped me from purchasing more. I just purchased 2 Fenix flashlights.

Three friends are helping me do some work so I would like to buy them each a 2xAA Cree/Soul/Rebel flashlight. I would like to limit the flashlight around $30 dollars each. Would the Terralux Lightstar3Led be a good choice? Or can someone make a recommendation.

Thanks
Bruce

i always disliked how some members give advice on the exact opposite of what another member is trying to ask (like what is the best 6P drop-in LED and they say to just buy a new Surefire L1) yikes! but saying that, im going to offer IMO only... in kind of the same way... why not try a 1 AA light? if you want to stay with the Cree/Rebel etc format try out the Jetbeam CL-E V2. U can pick it up with a CPF discount at bugoutgearusa for under 30 bucks. unless you wanted a real powerhouse thrower. I was just going off the desire for a Cree/Rebel etc format. Plus i own the JEtbeam L-E and i quite like it.

Just my $.002

Get 3 1 AA cell LM 31's form batteryjunction.com for 27.00 each with your cpf discount. The smaller size 1 cell with good output [80Lumen] is better to WOW non-flashaholics IMO. I love lending the LM 31 and watch them think the first click is it, then saying no click it again, WOW that's bright!

I have not really seen many 2xAAs in that price range. only the ultrafire C3 with extender tube. the 1xAA format is much easier to find, and its way brighter than the commonly available 2xalkalines in most stores (excluding lowes TF 2xC). i would go the 1xAA route, and its more impressive as well. just have an old 2xAA stock minimag around when they get the gift, and you'll get a big wow.

try these:

Fenix L2T v2.0 (when they get restocked in jan 08). That or you could go with a streamlight Jr. Luxeon and buy a K2 TFFC 0200bin and a McR 18 reflector to replace the stock 1 watt emitter and TIR. Pop out the TIR and solder in the K2, i think if i did the calculations right you get roughly 100 lumens from the LED and about 60 to 80 out the front end (about 2 to 3 times the amount of light that you get from the stock LED (luxeon I LD, and TIR).

+1 to Sarge as well on the LM 31 (its always nice to have the option of using a 3.7V for extended runtimes) etc. The might like the light from the SSC instead of the Cree. But still IMO eaither would be a great choice.

+1 to dano on the JetBeam C-LE V2. I have one and am very pleased. Now waiting for Bug Out Gear to get more in so I can also give them as Christmas gifts.

Thanks for the recommendations. I will purchase one of the 1aa that was recommended for my friends and one for me.

Considering the price point I would have to +1 on the JetBeam C-LE v2. If stock is still not available on that, then I would just go to Target and get the RiverRock 1AA 1W advertised as 42 Lumens. Holding out for the Jetbeam though is what I think the Flashaholic in me would do. But... I'm in recovery... honestly... I'm sure I have only bought 5 lights this month... well maybe six... I don't think I should count...

I have the Terralux lightstar3, and for 90 lumens out of 1 watt... it's pretty nice. Not as white as my cree's, in fact it almost looks a bit purple next to a cree beam.

But anyways, it's a good deal of light, in a nice package. It's a thick aluminum body, and the head gets warm after having it on for a few minutes, so the body does it's job of dissipating heat.

The biggest thing is there is no low mode. I haven't run down my first set of batteries in it, I'm tempted to, to see if it gradually gets dimmer.
