I need a LED light that will run directly off of 12v DC.

The light will be connected to a contact closure by two wires. When the contact closure is activated it will send 12v to the light to act as a signal for about 30 seconds and then shuts off.

I have been unable to find a simple light that can hook up this way. A flashing light would be even better preferably red.

I have looked for tail lights and bike lights but cant seem to find something that I am sure will run off of a 12V transformer with no modification.

Does anyone have any suggestions for someone who is electronically challenged? I usually buy all of my lights ready to go and am not knowledgeable enough to mess with resistors etc.

Thanks,
Phil

Phil;
You could just solder 6 -5mm red LEDs together in series-no resistor needed.
Do you have a "host" container picked out, or maybe a project box?

Good source for the superbright LEDs is either Hosfelt or BG Micro.

Thanks for the suggestion Doug. I was hoping to find a flashing bike light or something similar that would work but if I am unsuccessful I will follow your suggestion on the 5mm leds. I do not have a case picked out yet. I looked at the Hosfelt and BG Micro sites and they look good thanks.

Anyone else have any suggestions? Maybe something that didn't require soldering

I sold a 12V 3rd brake light off a Suburban to JRT, member 1908 about a month ago. Has 30 Red LED's in it. You may try contacting him. I don't know if he had any plans for it.

Could I just hook up something like this:

Third Brake Light

It sounds like it is plug and play. Hook up wrong and it just won't work. The transformer supplying my contact closure is 12V 500ma.

It doesn't have to be too bright because I will be using it in a darkened room. I do need to see it from about 20 feet away though, and it needs to draw my attention.

Free,
Sorry for the delay. I have a brand new 14 Volt Solico brand red flashing LED. Free for nothing. If you want to see a picture check out www.solico.com and go to "View Solico indicator lights .pdf catalog pages". Click on the first series (#18). It's the top one in the photo. White body, 6" wire leads, 5/16" hole, red raised lens. Just e-mail me your address if you want it.
Regards,
Kirk
