I have a sa-8 its not too bright for a claimed 180 lum it looks more like 80. I run 3 aaa but probly could run 2 123 or one of the 1800 whatever it is recharable but im thinking i need a better led and driver perferably 1 mode. any advice on what combo of driver, led and battery could get me to a true 200 lum also wher to buy the stuff i need would be great.

bump I still wanna do this i wanna get as many lum as i can while only spending about $20 im guessing chang the driver and led but i dont know what to get or where?

This thread may help a little. You might try shiningbeam sku#1218 with a cree XP-G R5 or XR-E R2 using a 18650 li-ion. A single 18650 is very well suited for this driver. This should give you 330 lumens with the XR-E and 440 lumens with XP-G. Should still work with the 3AA's also just not as good. If thats to much light shiningbeam also has a 1000ma driver. Neither will not except 2 123a's to much voltage. There is several places to look for parts. There is a thread with discounts offered to cpf members that has a good list of suppliers of lights and parts here.

Thanks 007 im new with modding flashlights but i use to mod cell phones back in the day lol. And btw its never to bright lol

I would use a cree XM-L and a 18650 with a 2800ma 8-7135 driver. The 18650 contains the most energy over the others. The light would have around 700 lumens and run time of about a hour with a 3100mah 18650. The beam would probably be more of a flood than a thrower. I bought my last 2800ma 8-7135 driver from lightmalls.com with no problems. They have different versions of modes. I use panasonic 3100mah batteries from Callie's Customs. They are other similar batterys for less. I usually buy my led's from lck-led.com. Takes a while to receive them. Illuminationsupply also carries a good variety and the driver with a quicker time to the door.Illuminationsupply's driver has the higher output amc7135's. 380ma per amc7135.
If you want a longer run time with less light output then unsolder one of the amc7135 off the board. Every amc7135 on the board gives 350ma of current (8x350ma=2800ma). Take one off and you have a 2450ma driver take two off and you have a 2100ma driver. This same driver could also work for a cree xp-g if you prefer a more tighter beam. Just take 3 to 4 amc7135's off the board for 1750ma for 5-amc7135's and 1400ma for 4-amc7135's.

700 lumes would be awesome ill look into these sites tommorow. Will it run of 3 AAA till I get the battery?

Thanks for the great post.

Should run with Nimh rechargeable AAA's for 15 mins or so at 2800ma. They light may start to dim before that though. Alkalines cant produce enough current and will have a greater voltage sag. They will work but probably at a very reduced output and possibly a even shorter run time.
