Im torn between the 500 lumen or the Cree led version. I would like to get a better feedback from you guys. Is it a good thrower? Does it have smooth or OP reflector? How is the beam quality and overall quality?

I have two of them ( 500 incandescent) and they are really well made lights. THEY WILL run perfectly on protected 18650's, as long as you feed it AW's. They are pretty decent throwers, but would be much better if you could replace the low orange peel reflector. They are large, heavy, protected well with o-rings, and have good threads. Twist the tail-cap for constant on, push it for momentary. Other protected 18650's won't get a flicker, but AW protected 18650's give a powerful beam with approx. 55 minutes of runtime (my own multiple run tests). I really like the light. - Larry

About 1/2 as bright might be a fair comparison. THe spill is the same on both..but the throw is much broader and more powerful on the Incan. Remember the Led is only drawing 1/4 of the current as the incan. Don't be thinking the Led is weak..no way, it's one of the most powerful Led's I have!

It's just not as strong and broad in the throw as some other Led only lights. But, as a drop-in..it's great. Having two in one- this is an excellent choice if you already have the Wf 500.

I go out with my Wf 500 and spot light Deer...no problem. THere are stronger and better throwing lights, but It is an excellent light. THe OP reflector gives a wide and super smooth beam...powerful, and a broad and strong throw...but just not a far as some other lights that are designed for long throw. I'd say 400 feet...maybe 500 if it's quite dark.

Everything is a comprise...the Wf 500 is a great all around light. With the Led drop in..it's a total package!

If you want long throw- there are a number of Led models that have this. You can also go HID! No one but you can say exactaly what you want, and even after you get any light, you may say...well, this still isn't quite perfect. Then you'll be like us, and go buy another light!

+1

So much potential wasted IMO. It's a good enough short / medium range light but with that many lumens and incan bulb it could have been a great thrower.

what kind of reflector and where can i get it?

Yeah I was wondering about that myself.

Does anyone know of where I can find a smooth reflector replacement or modification for the WF-500, possibly from another cheap flashlight?

AS of now, I don't know of any smooth reflectors..however, I'm not unhappy with mine the way it is....It's potent. I have an HID on order to do 1000' duty.

We'd need a smooth reflector with a slightly tighter focus (the one in the WF-500 seems a little wider than can be explained by an OP reflector alone.

As to what and where? I have no idea. There is an LED version of the light with good throw and smooth reflector, but the reflector is plastic AFAIK so would last about 5 minutes before ending up a blob goo.

The new WF500 I got from DX has less stiple than the first I got from Quality Chinagoods a year ago. The threads are a bit different as well so not all parts are interchangable.
The throw on the newest one is a lot better than the old one. The beam is still clean and free from artifacts.
