Hello,
I have got this old 3D Mag and I want to convert it to an ROP, or a Mag 85 type of light, and I need help with deciding which setup I want, and the parts needed. So tell me which setup you would reccomend and then tell me the specific parts needed to build, and if possible links to the parts. I am a newbie Modded mag guy so this is vital to this becoming real, Thanls for the help in advance.

The ROP bulbs seem more resilient to popping so I would go for that as a first hotwire mod.

Parts?

Metal reflector
Glass window
Batteries totaling to about 7.2-8v
Maglite
Blub

And I think that is basically it.

Don't trust me on this because I haven't built any hotwire mods yet.

A UCL would let more light through, but the Borofloat will take more thermal stress. I think for under 50 watt(ROP and Mag85 are both around 35-40 watt), UCL should be fine.

Most would say Fivemega's adapters are the best. Two of AW's C batteries would also work.

Ok, I think Ill get a Fivemega adapter and a UCL. And for batts would thes be good?http: http://www.batteryjunction.com/sanyo2700.html

I'm no expert, but those batteries look a little fishy to me. 2700 mAh is pretty high for AAs; it sounds like a lot of problems have been reported with AAs above 2100 or so like the Energizer 2500s. They don't specify Low Self Discharge chemistry, which you probably want. As far as I can tell, all LSD batteries are well-advertised as being LSD. They don't specify the max current either. ROP High draws around 4 amps IIRC, which is on the high side for consumer-grade AAs.

Take a look at these. They are LSD cells. Still no max current listed, but IIRC most of the LSD AAs tested have been good for these currents.

Watch your voltage too. You have a 3D mag, but the 6AA->2D carrier is the right voltage (7.2v). You'll need a dummy battery to reach the spring and complete the circuit. You could also try using a straight stack of 6 4/5 SubCs, or smaller if you can find them. You'd have to use paper or PVC pipe or radiator hose or something to make up the difference in diameter, and you'd probably have to modify the battery spring to fit the longer stack.

Don't forget to get the charger too. Chargers for multi-cell packs can get pricey. Good luck!

I did't mean about the Quality of the batts, I meant would the higher mah rating possibly flash the bulb. I want those batts because the more runtime the better. And Im going to pick up a new 2d Mag. Thanks any way though.

I got everything from FiveMega

the 6AA-> 2D Adapter
his metal cammed reflectors
a borofloat lens
and the 3854 rop bulbs

came to 83.50 , got here in 3 days, switched everything out and switched it on, my jaw dropped

took about 15 seconds probably to do everything (ok thats a bit exaggerated)

the only question i have is what charger i should use for his 6AA unit, since its possible to charge allthe batteries at one time.

(ps) i use sanyo eneloops

Well Im not going to charge them in the unit. And I just ordered some Sanyo 2700 mah batts that look totally sweet. I should get great runtime.
What is the diff in cammed and camless? Is it whether or not there is a neck on the reflector like the stock mag?

you have a 3D mag but seem to be putting together a design for a 2D mag.

Build an 1185 out of a 3D, it will make much better use of the space.

you need:

9AA>3D adapter
either a KIU socket, or FM G4>PR socket, or Kaidomain G4>PR socket.
aluminum reflector (lots of options come and go out there)
glass lens (lots of options from cheap to semi-cheap, all work fine for an 85)
a WE 1185 bulb (and maybe a spare or 2)
your 3D mag

the difference in cammed and camless is the ability to adjust the beam from spot to flood.....a camless reflector will be set and non adjustable.

yeah, go to the B/S/T FS/T section of this forum, lower on the forums list and you'll find fivemega, he'll help you out w/ everything.

What would be the best rechargeable aa's to use in my rop? Also, what plastic is there in the Lamp holder of a Mag? All the ones I have have all metal towers that hold the bulbs.

This has been discussed and answered in many threads that can be easily searched for.
