Need help on choosing new flashlight

FNG,

Since your a mechanic maybe you own some cordless powered Snap-On Tools. If so, then you might look at the new Versa Volt flashlight from your Snap-On man. This light uses the same battery as your cordless drill or impact. The head swivels from straight to 90 degrees. And it has a hook on it to hang from an open hood or something. With the wide base on the bottom, I can crawl under a truck to drop a drive line or something and the light stays put where I sit it while working. I've had mine for about 2 months.

Hope it helps.

Eric

Im just starting out and not able to afford Snap On tools. My brother and this master tech he talk to calls them "snap On, Snap Off" because they break often. No matter what tool you get, most of them have lifetime warranty. Just go buy something from K-Mart. Thier Benchtop tools are guaranteed lifetime. Same at O'Reilly or Advanced Auto Parts. That does seem like a cool idea that Snap On came up with though.

What color light do you guys think I should get? White or Turqoise(sp?)? Some might say both, then again, I dont have $60 to blow. The turquoise is twice as bright from what ive read but gives out a blue tint.

One more thing, how does the Arc AAA and the Mini Maglite compare in terms of brightness? I know its not really in the same catagory but out of curiosity, which is brighter?

FNG. I see nobody addressed your question on house and garage light(s). Check out the Princeton Tech Surge. Cost is about $25USD from www.brightguy.com . Uses 8 AA's. Run time about 3 hours. Compact design. Polymer case in yellow or black. Very bright light. IMHO, best bang for the buck.

FNG I would suggest white for color recognition. The Arc AAA and the X5 are a must for LED nuts

Just orded a white Arc AAA from Brightguy.com

Is the Arc AAA and LE the same thing?

The LE is a version of the AAA using a higher "rank" LED, meaning that it is of a premium quality and that the color is shifted more toward the green segment of the spectrum and is slightly brighter. LE= Limited Edition. HA= Hard anodised meaning a special process that applies a very tough "skin" which becomes part of the underlying aluminum making it more scratch and abrasion-resistant. There are different levels of this process. Grade or level III is full military grade. I believe that's the ARC's level. It also imparts a beautiful subtle gray/green hue to the light. It's really a little jewel.

FNG. 31 posts on one question in one day. Not bad. After you get squared away on your first go round of buys and mods the bug will bite. As was said, the brown truck will come to your door but with a Surefire M3T, a Streamlight Ultrastinger, an Underwater Kinetics 100 Lightcannon and more.
Best of luck to you.

FNG,

Well, maybe I should have read this thread before now!

The Arc AAA is a great buy, the LE is a tad brighter and a tad less blue. Once you get it don't freak out when you see a bluish tint to the light, that's pretty normal for white LED's.

BTW, I may be partial because I own one, but I highly recommend getting the Inova X5. It's very bright for it's size and the batteries last long enough to make the $2 per battery easily tolerable. I have some pictures of the Inova X5 on my website (link at the bottom) and some comparison photos with the photon II.

Also, check out Brock's site: Brocks LED page

He has a list near the bottom of his page of all the LED flashlights he has tested in order of brightness. Very helpful!

Look were the X5 is on the list!

Just got the AAA from the big brown truck. I dont have a AAA right now but ill see how it goes. One question, is the LED supposed to be off center? Is there anything I can do about this? Please respond Greg or Peter if youre reading this. Thank You.

I have an Inova X5, Nice bright light for an LED. But I think the price of batts would kill you. 2 Li I am thinking of ordering some nexstar bulbs for my mini mags to make them brighter. good luck

Just what >IS< the life of 2 123's in the X5? I'm still on my first set.

PS: It's a GREAT car light. Lithiums are boss in the cold, last forever, and the light isn't that big, so you can mount it anywhere.
