Well, let me start off that I am a helicopter mechanic and will mainly use the light for inspections up close, so I would guess I need something that floods well.

It must either be AA or rechargable. We get AA's for free at work but not the 123 lithiums.

I currently have a Fenix L2D that I bought a year ago, but I want a new toy to play with. The L2D works great, but.....I guess I just want a change for now. I was thinking about trying the Streamlight Stinger LED even though it seems to be a fairly big light, shouldn't be too much of an issue. Any others I should consider???

Thanks.

AA: Zebralight H50 (or is it H30? one's CR123 and one's AA). No optic, so pure flood, though it's a headlight.

It is not only a headlight, but it can be used for it, if your use the right accessories. It can also be placed in a breast pocket, with another accessory.

I'd put the Nitecore D10 on your "short list".
It's not that expensive (about the same as your L2D or less), and it's a single cell light with a very simple but variable and capable UI.

And of course, it uses the AA battery that you get for free. ;)

If you can ever see your way into a CR123 light, the EX10 would be a good choice also because it's identical to the D10 but 1/2" shorter due to the use of the smaller CR123 battery.

Easy, get an L1D body and you have a smaller AA light with the same functions.

If you want something really different, get the NiteCore D10, or the LiteFlux LF5XT (once a few minor issues are worked on on that light).

Both offer pretty decent flood, although the LF5XT has a very smooth hotspot to spill transition, so it may work really well for you.

sounds like you've already gotten as much brightness as you're going to get with AA's with the l2d, sounds to me like either the zebralight, the d10 or maybe the fenix e20 or an lod might be nice for you, if you are looking for something just different.
