My dad may soon be working on a cruse ship as a video editor, and me(being the flashaholic that I am) wants to send him with a good light. I tried to convince him that the E1B BACKUP was the way to go due to the two level output, but he shot it down due to the size. He likes the 6P LED cause it fits nice in his hand. I am a HUGE surefire supporter but have nothing wrong with any other light. Any suggestions?

PS: He doesn't know if he will need a coast guard approved light or not as he will have some safety duties on the ship.

what about the E2DL?

Re: Need help picking the right light for dad!?!?!?

I just recently got the E2D LED DEFENDER and I LOVE IT! I told him about that and he thinks that it is a little to small diamiter is a bit small, he is a LONG time Mag-Light user and I think that that is why he likes the bigger 6P more.

Well in that case... just make him a Mag85

I agree with the above to posters. I think the E2DL is the way to go here. A very nice high(120Lm) and a nice low of 5lm with a solid size for a guy who likes that slightly more size and of course, fun crennelation:whistle:

I want one myself, but no money:(

Re: Need help picking the right light for dad!?!?!?

If I recall, the E2DL is more of a spot than a flood type of light. Don't forget on a cruise ship there are no applications for a long throw unless the ship is really old. Most ships have done away with the long "bow to stern" hallways, and every things else will be a short distance situation so a "floodier" light may be better. Unless he has some sort of certification, his safety duties will consist of standing in a stairwell directing people to the upper deck to their muster stations ( where you prepare to board a lifeboat ). He may find that he'll need a light for lighting up the sound booth, video room, backstage area on a regular basis more often than for an emergency situation, so a small light may be better. A cruise ship is amazingly well prepared for most emergencies. I never feel like I can completely count on a hotel, shopping mall, or office building to be prepared.....but on a ship, there is a very good chance that things will be handled well, orderly and efficiently. I lived on a cruise ship for almost 5 years and was always impressed with the effort and resources that went into being prepared.

Since a ship job is a completely new lifestyle its hard to imagine what would be best for him. You might want to let him work a few weeks with whatever you have on hand, and then ask him what his needs will be as far as emergency vs edc, battery availability, size, burn time, etc.

Would a Fenix L2D work well? AA powered and multimode. There's also the L2T V2.0 for something simpler and with a forward clickie.

You could also get him a Maglite drop-in/mod because he likes Maglites.

What do you think he will need? Long runtime? Lots of output? Lots of throw? Lower output? Easy to find batteries?

If he likes the feel of the 6P, then get him a 6P with an LED upgrade. I suggest the Malkoff M60L or M60FL, both drop in are tested true and have good reviews on them. Don't get anything else, since you already know what your Dad likes, and since he will be using this alot and his is comfortable with it, then get him the 6P... but surprise him with an upgrade.

Re: Need help picking the right light for dad!?!?!?

The 6PD might work better because of the forward clickie.

Or maybe you'll be buying him a multimode clickie if you go with the 6P.

Re: Need help picking the right light for dad!?!?!?

My dad saw some of the lights I was buying and ended up buying himself a couple malkoff mag dropins, and a LAPD Pelican light. Any one of those would actually be a good gift light due to using standard batteries (mag dropins) or a built in charger (LAPD).

If he likes the 6P LED, that's the best light for him.

Get him a nice Surefire flap-holster for it.

6P for your dad? If my kid gave me a 6P, I would give it right back and ask for a SureFire M2 + Wolf-Eyes 2-Mode (3.7V-6V) R2 WC. Dual output, rock-solid module housed in a shock-isolated bezel on top of a rock-solid 2xCR123A (1x17670) body. Seriously, any of the above recommendations should be fine. A 6PL would make a fine gift indeed :) .
