So I picked up a Nightsun light the other day form a bike swap that doesn't have a charger or batteries..... so Now I'm looking for some sort of battery for it. The Factory ones are way to Pricey for me, and I hear they are kind of heavy.

  • 50 Watt Hour Ni-MH Battery System - $ 279.95
  • 40 Watt Hour Ni-Cad Battery - $149.95
  • 30 Watt Hour Ni-Cad Battery - $99.95
So anyhow I am told this things 12v. I am wondering if anyone knows of a batter that may work for these. Or something that's adaptable.

I think this thing is basically what I have.

That seems a bit pricey, if you look here:

That's a 12V@5Ah = 60watt-hour battery pack, for $78. You need a charger:

roughly $23, so all told, for maybe $115 s/h, you have a battery/charger package.

You'll still have to get some wiring/parts, so let's say $125 total for a fully configured pack).

It won't be as pretty, and maybe not as nice a charger, but at $280 for 50wh, you are saving more than 50%, and getting a slightly higher wh rating as well (60 instead of 50).

You can usually find "bike-specific" packages from several sources online (all-battery, batteryspace, etc), don't have time to look into it further, but they would include pack, charger, cables, and often in a water-bottle or other "compact" bike-friendly format.

Ya know it just dawned on me that if I run the same plugs that I have on my R/C car I could use that charger. I wonder if I could make a 12v pack from that type of cell??? I think I may have to swing by the Shop sometime next week.

i would personally look at lipo cells. no memory, quick charge, a lot lighter, smaller volume and they don't self discharge. Again i would look at RC plane packs. Only limitation is that you cannot deep cycle them as they are dead if you drop a cell below 3.0V.

My friend who commutes calculated that more energy was lost through self discharge than used lighting his way when he required light only on one leg of his journey.

well hell maybe Ill jsut save up for a bit and buy the crap that they come with.
