Re: Need ideas for a new headlamp
I think what Baddog is looking for here is a headlamp that would normally be used at a sensible level, but is capable of occasionally giving a big 1700 lumen beam. It won't be able to handle the heat for long, nor will the battery last but that's not the point.
I'm interested because I've always been frustrated at the headlamps currently available. Among other problems, I think they're all just too big and heavy. This includes the ones I've made but I let myself off because I'm not a multi-million dollar manufacturer so I have to make mine out of whatever I can find.
The only really small headlights available are little 5mm LED ones. I want something the size of a Petzl Tikka (os smaller) but with XP-Gs and a big enough battery (back-of-head or belt mounted). The Piko is getting closer to what I want, but the price is a bit of a turn-off. Even the Piko is a bit bigger than I think it needs to be in terms of thickness (I blame the push button switch). It also only gives 550 lumens so Baddog won't be satisfied!
So give us your thoughts on how to make a really small, lightweight headlamp that.
I think one of the biggest challenges will be getting the switch right. If it's in the head, it needs to be super-small. It may need to be put elsewhere.

the battery issue: am happy to go with a 26650 IMR on the back of my noggin, its about all the weight a strap could take, multiple LiIons close to ones brain should be avoided, so perhaps an option of one on the head and perhaps for an extended run a power pack on a hip belt or backpack...
mathewM makes a nifty bike light with a real tiny switch that straps to a handle bar or helmet, perhaps that would be the way to go...
