I'm looking for a P60 drop in that will have a long run time and work with 1X18650 AND 2xAA AND 2xCR123. I know almost all 18650 drop ins will also work with 3XAA.

For normal around the house taking the dog out, etc.. I'll run this light with 18650, so a turbo mode very bright would be nice. The harder, more important use case is camping, where I might be several days in a row with 2 hours + at night with a flashlight, or might even be 6 hours walking at a time in cold temps (e.g. summit hike). While turbo mode might be nice, longer run time is more important, I'm thinking 100ish lumens would be a good all around target, 70 might be fine too, under 40 is probably too low for a single output. For camping, I'll more likely be using AA, maybe CR123, simply because AA are generally more available and I won't always have my solar charger to charge 18650.

The drop in will most likely be used in a solarforce with appropriate extension tubes (no ext for 2cr123 and 18650, half tube for 2xaa and double tube for 3xaa).

I'm thinking for camping, my longest runtime bet is to bring my own CR123s and use that mostly, and bring a half extension tube to run on 2xaa if I need to get extra batteries locally.

Looking for the wisdom of CPF to point me in the most optimal direction. 🙂

I see Malkoff LLs might fit the bill.

1) As of 3/2016, any current suppliers for more than LL? Malkoff store has L and LL. I see LLL and LLLL talked about on the forums, but, none available at overready or illum factory. Are the LLL and LLLL not sold anymore?

So if no LLL .....
2) would a LL or a M361 be better? Having turbo mode might be nice, saving battery power at 15 lumens might be nice, but, for most of the walking at 80 to 100 lumens, the LL looks like it will draw much less power than the M361 on medium mode.

3) Solarforce has some 2.7 to 9V 3 mode bulbs to accommodate a wide range of battery types, that should work fine with 2xAA. BUT, no indication of the power draw so I can't estimate the runtime.

4) Would that solarforce or a Malkoff LL have better runtime on 2xAA?

5) Any other long run drop ins I should consider for camping?

Thanks!

I have run a M61WL with 4xAA, 2xCR123 and 1X16650 so can't see why a M61LL couldn't do it. Though I never got it to work in my Solarforce. Needed an a spring or something so just used a 6P instead with extensions. M61s are nice for camping due to the beam profile IMHO. Lots of flood but still some punch.

The m61N LLL and LLLL have only been sold by Oveready. The M61LLL 219 has only been sold by Illumn. I don't think an M61LLLL 219 was ever offered for sale.

These are not regularly available. If you want one you might was well start a Want To Buy thread. It could be a year or longer before another batch is created.

For general indoor/outdoor use, I personally prefer the extra reach of the M61N LL over the LLL version. For strictly indoor use, the LLL, or even LLLL would be more than adequate.

Malkoffs don't have "turbo" modes. If it's spec'd to output 400 lumens, then it'll output 400 lumens continuously until the batteries are drained.

If you only want one drop-in to use in all situations, then the M361N may be a good choice, if tailcap switched multi-mode drop-ins are acceptable to you.

I'm thinking a Malkoff MD2 with an extension, hi/low ring, and an m61l, or ll if you can find one, would be about as good as you could get. It would give you the options of running just about any battery combo you want.

Lots of drop-ins will give a very low level w/o silly pwm
>>that said, I have to agree with the good headlamp idea for camping!!

I have a Fenix HP12 headlamp that runs on an 18650 & with the cell in the back it's really balanced.
my one and only Fenix light and it's superb
