Title says it all:

I'm looking for the ultimate hunting light. No price limit might be extreme, but I can invest in good gear in the ~2500 range. This pretty much opens me up to any light on the used market. I spent ~500 on a Magnalight RL-85-HID and it was ok. When I put a red filter on it all of it's capability vanished. I understand a filter will filter light, it just filtered it to be unusable for the extremes I'm looking for. I also pondered if I needed a higher output HID to compensate or potentially look at a different type of light all together (maybe short-arc)? Also, I felt the magnalight had a very cheap feel to it. The plastic lens scratched super easy, just couldn't see where 500 dollars went. So after this, I decided to return it and invest in a light I want to keep regardless of cost. Also, I like having unique things so an exotic light is a plus.

Basic requirements:
I'd like a light that can provide lots of throw to get illumination out to the 500+ yard range using a red filter. I don't want a beam that is so narrow that when I'm scanning it becomes difficult to illuminate objects (or track them if they get skittish). Also, I plan on ruling the night at some point and investing in Night Vision. So, any light that is useful with IR filters is a plus.

Ergonomics is a plus, but not a deal breaker. We usually take turns spotting and shooting. So, lugging around a 10 pound gun or 10 pound light - what's the difference?

So the lights that are on the list so far:

Lightforce SL240 - Looking at the photos online this light reminds me of the magnalight. However, some have modified it with 85W HID's and got some amazing capability with it. Also, it looks like Lightforce has a custom shop now that will make this in a factory 75W HID.

Maxabeam - Definitely an exotic thrower. Looks like Gen 3 put out more light. Now, for my purposes, Maxabeam might be beneficial with its low lumen output. I don't want to blind an animal or cause it to be skittish when lit up. I just need to be able to see it and clearly identify the animal. The negative, I don't know what a short arc can do with a red filter. Also, the 500 yard range might be too close for the Maxabeam.

Hellfighter - Probably perform the same as my original magnalight, but at least it wouldn't feel cheap. Same - 35W HID - so I expect Red Light performance to suffer.

Night Hunter One - The name would make you think it's a perfect match. Looks to be portable (compared to my next suggestion) and can throw nicely. Again, not sure about red filter performance.

Megaray - Buy once cry once. Thank god for the used market. Definitely could light up anything at range. Again, this is a throw specific light so it might be too narrow of a beam to be useful at 500 yards. I'd have to hire a separate person to carry this bad boy at night - or just hunt with a light.

I'm open to suggestions or more input from people that have used these lights. Maybe none of these?

I think You should try to get more info the the sub-forum dedicated to HID and throwers.
There the info should be present.

Cuz most of us here in the first Sub-forums are thinking of and using lights that will be at the person when needed and not totally useless big super-throwers, left in the car, or at home, because they are too bulky to bring along (I hope not to be totally wrong with that)
😉

Wasn't happy with any RED filtered light. Red LED flashlights on the market were weak. Ended up DIY. Sounds like you need a custom spotlight made with a Luminus red emitter. If you want biggest look at the PT120/121. Photo below was at 110yds. Rectangle beam is an 8A aspherical Maglite modded to red PT54 next to Cree red 2x 3up feeder light. Beam width is 30ft. If you want it DIY or find someone.

Looks like you understand my pain 😉

That's a nice setup, definitely useable for a stand at that range.

I wonder if I can find someone talk an SR90 and rig up a red bulb in it. That might be one of the best setups.

A Fenix TK70 could be a candidate as well, as it has a stronger emitter than the SR90. Maybe have it de-domed to tighten the throw....stock, its about neck and neck with the SR90 as far as throw, but with a broader field of view. Narrowing that field of view to more like what the SR90 is throwing, but with more lumens to work with, could be deadly.

😀

Plan C is to check out Wayne the Mad scientist at ElektroLumens, he has some insane photon torpedo tubes - He's got a 21,000 lumen (Emitter) LED flashlight fer chrissakes (Kong).....plus some slightly less insane than that...but stronger than the SR90 and TK70.

And his stuff is billet, it is not delicate...its a freekin tank if he sells it. (I have some stuff of his, and you guys sound like a match).

Looking for a red hunting light brought me to this forum 8 months ago. About once a month someone like yourself (less than 2% of FL users) comes looking for a better colored hunting light. You will find a ton of advice and most of it will not work for your application. I am sure you have searched the net and seen all the claims by some ”BIG DITTY” super gizmo colored led crazy claim flashlights. Just about all of them use the same Cree emitter that is used in the cheap DX color flashlight. They may have a better build, reflector and driver but the same weak emitter. One flashlight that does it all does not exist. Filtering a white led blows. The SST90 RED is no better than the PT54 RED mentioned in post above. The Luminus PT120/121 are largest single die emitters made, copper bases and are made for heavy duty use for devices like DLP projectors and televisions. What is lacking for this emitter for our use is a 30+ amp driver and power supply for portable flashlight use. The red PT120 is capable of 1500+ lumens of red light. I have build a novelty PT120 green led from a 4D Maglite with a copper heat sink and mosfet switch. Heat and short battery life make this combination unpractical but fun. Always looking for a better RED light flashlight, if you find it post it.
