How can I find out about Nelco lights? I seems pretty hard to find anything about them on the net...

Scuba,

Sway said they were at Big Lots, but I couldn't find any in my neck of the woods. Seems like a standard car plug-in spot, but the reflector is aluminum and thus you can put in much higher watt bulbs without the reflector melting (of course you have to modify it a bit).

Hi scuba,

What I have on NELCO lights is very little but here ya go. NELCO stands for "New England Light Company" their address is 700 Quality Road, Fayetteville NC USA. The box says made in China so you may find this light under other names.

I took another look around and couldn't find anything on the net about this company. My local Big Lots has the NELCO Nautilus for $7.99 big chunky plastic light but with a very good metal reflector and glass lens that makes for a good thrower.

Not a bad deal for 8 bucks /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

chessehead,

Thanks for the answer. I wonder if it's possible to get them online somewhere...

Re: NELCO? - Found ONE!

Found one at the second BigLots I went to - just one. All by itself on a top shelf. Box is 8x8x6 - that threw me off - I thought it would be in a bigger box. Yellow, orange and purple graphic on the box.

The box states that there is an "optional battery pack" - I wonder if the optional battery pack you can get is a compact car?! It says not to run the lamp on your car battery without the engine running or it'll destroy the battery!

JSWrightOC and I will be playing with this after the holidays are over.

Photo credit goes to Sway. Here it is lighting a building at 150 yards:

Re: NELCO? - Found ONE!

Sway was nice enough to send me one of these, after I found none at my local Big Lots.

Its a bit large, and cumbersome, but nice and bright.
I compared it to my 1MCP Brinkmann spotlight, which is smaller. The Brinkmann had a wider beam, that for under 50 yards, actually was better, cuz it lit a larger area.
Beyond 50 yards the NELCO was the winner.

It even has an adjustable tilting handle. That can be detatched.

The metal reflector will be great for a HID mod I would imagine.

Simply cant be beat for $8. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif

Re: NELCO? - Found ONE!

Now, If I'm doing the math right, 100W at 12V means it's drawing 8 1/3 amps! YOW!

Now I need to find a small auto or tractor lead-acid battery that'll handle that load for a while and add a Radioshack female 12V auto socket. I can charge it from my 12V auto battery charger. A bit cumbersome, but at least it'll be portable.

Re: NELCO? - none here.

None at the big lots here. But I did pick up a no-name 1 million CP spotlight for $5, it has a light orange peel reflector, which is weird. Does a 55w light really give 1 million CP?

Re: NELCO? - none here.

And a 100 watt gives of between 300,000 and 3,000,000 CP depending if you believe car headlight or spotlight manufactures. Spotlights are all grossly exaggerated. The only important thing is to know if it's 55 or 100 watts or sometimes in between. Spotlights are stupid bright regardless.

Big Lots here had a Coleman with textured reflector, those don't typically throw as well. Eh, most of the fun is the quest.
