New 2007 Times Square ball is all Luxeons

Just read it on BBC News, looks like a satellite. I wonder if the cost of using LEDS outweighed the energy savings.

After looking at the demo and realizing there are no longer any protruding bulbs, it kinda looks like a psychedelic soccer ball.

if they really wanted to do something big for the 100 year anniversary , they should make that ball BIGGER ....when i went to times square for new years the ball looks like a peanut its so small

It turns out one of the guys I know works at LED Effects, Inc who built that ball.

He said main LEDs were Luxeon K2s, and the smaller LEDs in between were Nichia Rigels.

the smaller LEDs are actually Luxeon Rebel cool white LEDs (go to the lumileds website and read the press release on the ball)
