As many of you know SF has been making it more and more difficult to use alternatives to the primary CR123 in their lights. The purpose of this thread is not to discuss their motivation but to discuss an alternative which is worthwhile to invest. As far as the E2L-Cree (KX2) goes, the P17670 works great, as long as you can get your hands on a older style body which fits the P17670, bore out the new body or have/can obtain a custom body. It has been posted here on CPF that this setup will give you around 4 hrs. (compared to 9 hrs. w/ primaries) of regulated funtime per charge. There are no negative side effects that I have found thus far, nor that I have heard from others that are currently running this setup.

The E1L-Cree is another story. Although the R123 (offered by AW) does fit into the body and does allow the light to be turned on, it flickers continuously...Rather than a "flicker", a better description of the effect is more like 2 seconds at the regular light output and 2 seconds at a higher output and it continues to alternate as long as the light is on. I have searched and read everything I could find on this topic and the closest thing to an answer that I have found is in the sig line of enLIGHTenment, and as useful as this is, it is not a direct answer to the "No Li-Ion" for the E1L-Cree.

Will a cell like this allow the E1L-Cree to run without the "flickering" for a reasonable amount of time to make it worth purchasing?

Specifications:

Nominal Voltage : 3.2V
Capacity : 500mAH
Lowest Discharge Voltage : 2.0V
Standard Charge : CC 250mA CV 3.6V
Cycle Life : > 500 cycles
Weight : 16.5g

If this cell will allow it to run, will over-discharging (below 2.0V) be an issue while being used in the E1L-Cree since it is not a protected cell?

If this cell is will not work with the E1L-Cree, are there any other alternatives?
