i just got back from wally world to get a lx but they didn't have it, so i got the rebel(i need a new led light because my girlfriend has my original long life). went home and tried it and found it has two cracks in the led!. it is magnified by the beam shaper that i don't like anyway so i took it out because it is to narrow, you can only see them with the shaper in. on the other hand for 14$ it comes with three colored filters(red, blue and amber), belt clip that you snap around your belt and then hang the light off of and two aa batts. i am going to email brinkmann and let them know about this. any one have one of these?. later.

The LED isn't cracked.
Those lines you're seeing are shadows from the hair-thin gold wires that the LED chip suckles off. Put a magnifying glass in front of any white Nichia LED, and if you adjust the focus just so, you'll see the same pair of lines.

thanks for the reply, i thought it would have an affect on the life of the led. all i need now is to find a replcement window for it so crap will not get in. thanks.

Hey, does the beam from your Long-Life or Rebel focus an image that looks like incandescent vomit? The LED in my long-life has this bizzare blotchy yellow and white pattern about it.

Also An LED light with colored filters! So you take this white LED that is about 1/4 the efficiency of a red-orange LED, then reduce the output of the white LED with a red filter. Wouldn't a few colored LEDs and a switch have been both better and cheaper?

Why make a light the size of 2 D cells, and run it on a pair of AAs?

The Long-life could be repackaged into a nice little pocketable light the size of 3 AAs side by side, but they repackaged it as the Rebel.

Does that reflector actually do anything? I mean LEDs put very little light out the sides.

I think Brinkman LED lights were made to look like Brinkman thinks consumers think flashlights should look like, instead of what good engineering could have done.

I hate those lights; good only for taking apart.

Evan, I'd recommend that you don't buy that light. For some reason, I don't think you'd like it.

I was thinking about buying one of these until I noticed that a significant number of them had broken tailcaps on the shelf.

The tailcap tends to break just at the top of the threads - don't drop it on it's end!

I think I probably have a new version cap, because i have tried overtightening the cap and then unscrewing it many times, and it feels very sturdy and doesn't even make any cracking noises. it's still entact.

i have had some time to play with it and gotta say i like it, still with out the beam shaper. the shaper dose me no good, way to narrow for what i use a led light for. i just can't stop,i picked up an LX tonight and the beams not that bad and the food is very useful.

Brinkmann has already devised a fix for this. Apparently, there was a mismatch between the plastic and an adhesive they used, causing the plastic to decompose and eventually fail. New tailcaps were designed that do not use adhesive. If you have an earlier unit that has a broken tailpiece, they'll send you a replacement tailpiece at no cost.
