New Eos, not the Eos II worklight.

Far side of crazy.
Princeton Tec's new site is up and running and they have updated the original Eos to a rebel emitter with all of the features of the original Eos with a stated 50lm output.

In my opinion, they missed the boat by not upgrading the tactical to the rebel or at least offering the colored lenses to the new Eos. The lenses of the tactical solve the hot spot problems for close range tasks of the original so now you have to decide between output and flexibility. Personally, I don't mind carrying two lights, and I am sure that they wouldn't mind you buying two either, but while I am backpacking I would rather not have to trade while I am hiking and break my stride.

Here is my post in my thread, which could have some bearing on what you mention:

OK. saabgoblin's topic got me to looking. I have the new model EOS, as shown here, and it is in blue. It has a frosted optic, so the hot spot is not very intense. I tried to take some beamshots, but my camera does not show the gradient very well. The hotspot is just a slightly brighter blob, and is quite large. I think I must have one of the packages that were left over from the last run.

I have only had a few headlights, but I like this one. If it has a decent battery life, it should be great. I am running eneloops, so don't particularly care, except that I don't have enough batteries to change them without chargeing. I bought it for being watertight, fairly compact, and with a floodier beam. If you can track one down, you might like this one.

Hello Any Cal and thanks for the information. I might actually like the new Eos but I am concerned that they may have overpowered the lower output options resulting in too much light for close range tasks. From what I recall from their old website, they classified the Eos as a focused beam as opposed to the increased flood that you and their site mention but they don't picture the optic as being frosted but it just looks like they recycled their old images. I guess that I'll have to wait until I see one in person, read some more reviews, or just break down and buy one for myself.

They do have the tactical quad headlight as well as an industrial quad headlight. They show updated quad headlights on their website now being 45 lumens. They must have updated the quad to Nichia GS l.e.d.s finally. I'd be happier about it if I didn't already buy 2 EOS II headlights (and now they have cheaper upgraded EOS headlights available too). These options should be better for you if you want floodlight instead of a spotlight.

Let's try this. Here is the headlamp, you can see the frosty optic:

And here is a beamshot on high at about 11 1/2' :

The hotspot isn't actually that pronounced, but that is the way the camera picks it up.

In the store, I tried one of the clear optic lights. It had a laser beam for a hotspot w/ a dim spill. I was not going to buy it no matter what. When I got this one, I immediately tried it out, so I could take it back easily if I did not like it. The beam is nothing like the original.

That is a 2c Maglight for scale.

saab, go ahead and pull the circuit out so we can see the insides.

The Eos is one of my favorite headlamps (I got 4 of'em).

Thanks for the beam shots and feedback. The beam, output, and clarity appear to be far superior to the original, very nice indeed, but I hope that we won't loose too much throw from the frosting. More than likely, I'll be getting one and attempting to mod the tactical although I have only found 50lm Rebels that are what they call one up, where the emitter is not perfectly centered, so I am not sure how this would play out in so far as modding but I will have to get my feet wet somewhere.

Looks like the same beam from the EOS 2 so I would say your light is the newer updated Rebel. So now what? Do I get yet another EOS for my missed med mode or try something new like the Streamlite Argo C4 just to mix it up. I will make up some reason to justify yet another light. Say I need one for my truck and multiple packs. You know crazy stuff like that.

No the newer EOS has lots of throw. In fact it is a good combo of flood and throw.

Trying to keep it to two, the tactical and the original but we know how that story is going to play out. Gee, an excuse to buy a new headlamp and go backpacking but I still can't let go of the desire for the colored lenses, Princeton Tec is just taunting me because you just know that they will upgrade the tactical next year.

Thanks everybody!

What was the output of the old EOS again? I'm curious how this new headlamp compares to a modded v1 EOS (a good mod with seoul star and Khatod reflector).

Hmmm, worth a look...

I believe that the original was in the area of 24Lm so they have now doubled the output rating and softened the spot, not certain about comparative throw in meters. Look up the specs on the Eos tactical from their site and in so doing, you will have the specs of the older generation Eos.

I know what is going to happen to me regarding this headlamp, I'll have to buy a new Eos tac to mod because I don't want to destroy my old one and I'll probably wind up buying the new version as well so I will be up to 4 Eos headlamps and finding quite a logical justification for each as well.

For a throw monster, the new Primus headlamp looks great although I have no idea about regulation and or run times, check out the review in headlamps. I also want to check out the old Nuwai 1Wx2CR123 from Flashlight reviews/Battery Junction because it looks as if it is double the output and throw of the original Eos at a third of the cost but you will loose the color temperature of the rebel.

I'll stop there because I am starting to go into "junkie justification mode" and I'll never stop.

Thanks for the modding tip.
