I bought two of the Mag Mag-Numstar Xenon lamps for the 6D light and was favorably impressed (once I got past the still holey beam).

The orignal Mag-Numstar that I had in there, on tight focus measured about 8,000 cd. The new Xenon lamp measured about 12,000 cd (measured at ten feet).

Poor side spill, hole in the middle when you broaden the beam, but not bad for a penetrating beam.

Also, draw is only about 800mA which means it should run for about ten hours or more on a set of D cells.

Not bad if you need that sort of thing. Could we say, can't beat it with a club. Oh, it is a club. Nevermind.

Here's a picture of the old and the new (left to right) Mag-Numstar lamps.

Cheers,

Richard

Very nice review. Have one, and was also going to update it. Kinda like the clubby feel to it and the run time is also a plus.

Eh, any thoughts about getting the 5D Xenon and giving it a little more oomph? That kinda was my plan.

I sure do like those Xenon Star bulbs. They are definitely brighter that the stock krypton ones. You can get a pretty long throw from a 6-D with one. It puts a nice bright spot on a drive-in theater screen from the back row! When the show's over, of course! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I got it at Action-Lights on the Web

I must say, however, despite the optimistic measurements, it still looked puny compared to the SL TL-3 incandescent and the SRTH on a 9P with an N2. But, you do get almost a whole night's worth of light out of one set of batteries.

It will stay by my bedside. If the ceiling falls down, it might also be useful as a prybar/lever.

We think of these things living in earthquake country.

Cheers,

Richard

A good thing about the big Mags is the availability and cost of replacement bulbs, parts, and batteries. They're cheap and easy to find in my neck of the woods.

The big mags are good choices for general purpose household lights since their size makes them hard to lose. I have a red-LED CMG Infinity that I was using last night and now I don't know where it is. It'll turn up. But I haven't used my Mag 3D in months and I know exactly where it is. It's just too big to get buried under junk on my desk or whatever.

I've got a red Infinity for night use. It's great. Try hanging the light up near your bed on the bedpost or on a nail.
