I just noticed on the Good Deals forum that a number of vendors are clearing out their Mag Light LED drop-ins for C & D cell Mags. Is Mag by any chance about to introduce an updated version of their drop-in, perhaps with a Cree? Has anyone heard any rumors?

I can't help but be pessimistic. If they do; I hope they'll use some form of heatsinking. That'd really give the general public a taste of what LEDs can do and make maglites worth every penny you'd pay for one. But, I doubt they'll end up doing something like that.

I don't really think they Magleds sold too good because the typical person buying Mags would most likely not be wanting to spend the extra money to get the LED versions and are "loyal" (so to speak) to incads. Or watch them make K2 versions with the same heatsinking with the current line.

I also wish that mag would do something worthwhile with the magled as I love the rock solid mag body and deep throw reflectors, but I think we will not see an improvement for quite some time and even then who knows if it will just be the same module with a new LED. Such great potential.....

I went to http://www.maglite.com/feedback.asp and sent Mag Instrument a message asking if they have any plans to release lights with modern LEDs like CREE or Rebel. I encourage all of you to do the same. They won't make them unless they know there is a strong market for them.

If they respond to my message I will post the response. But I'm not going to hold my breath.

The MagLED drop-ins might just not be selling - there are sooooo many better drop-ins out there, so cheaper price to just get them sold and out the door maybe??

Oh god don't give them ideas!

I really want to like mags again (for something other than modding the body) but the MagLEDs left much to be desired with the heatsinking. I would guess that the Drop ins weren't selling well, so they're going to just focus on just selling the entire Maglight with LED. We can only hope that they put forth a brand new design that heatsinks to the body of the light.

It just blows me away that a company like Mag doesn't have employees on sites like this to "get a feel for what people want." Sure, they mainly sell to the general public, and not flashaholics, but still, they could do so much better. If Lowes can sell a CREE light, surely Mag could.

It appears that Crees are starting to creep very slowly into mainstream stores. I think M@g still has a few years.

Perhaps the fact that a mainstream company like Rayovac is selling a CREE light will push Mag to improve their product line.As long as the general public is unwilling to spend over twenty dollars for a good light Mag may be reluctant to make any changes though.

Yeah, I think Mag will come out with something different soon. Maybe before xmas or first quarter next year. Hope it isn't just a Cree LED.

The MagLed's weren't all THAT bad ;) I picked one up for a 4D I've got. It runs for 44 hours in regulation. Dims a little the first 20 minutes, but not that bad for an emergency light. There's a thread on how to mod the unit to run at an even lower level for a LONG time. There's a couple of threads with pix on how to replace the luxeon with something better. Fairly easy looking mod relatively speaking.

The Terralux module isn't too bad either. The drive circuit can be modified to get run time almost as good as the Mag-LED and better brightness too.

There's a lot of potential in Maglites. The Malkoff drop in is a good example, as are all the various mods we've seen.

Everything is beginning to fall in place on these. I expect to have them available in large quantities within a couple months. Just in time for Christmas!:)

My guess is that they just aren't selling well. It would be interesting to see some sales figures but... :ironic:

I think we're talking 2 different things: MagLED dropins being closed out due to slow sales vs Malkoff dropins being hot and thus sold out.
