New Malkoff Flashlight: MD2

So is this "jump in brightness" an issue that everyone is having? It doesn't seem like this should be happening. It sounds like there is a contact issue with the switch that is causing higher resistance for some reason.

This seems to be a common trait of some switches as the switch latches on. Would not be an issue with me if overall resistance is fairly low.

Got mine today, but it didn't come with a switch. I sent a message to Gene via his website. I'm hoping he can just send me the switch and I can install it myself. It was torture waiting for it to arrive. I had everything ready - M60, 18650, even a diffuser lens to test out. But alas, no switch. I just realized maybe some o-rings are missing too. Is there supposed to be one in the groove below the threads? Should a gasket be in the head?

Issue resolved. Thanks Gene & Cathy!

I began a runtime test this morning using Gene's new 2-stage ring for the MD2. I'm testing a M60WF on LOW with a AW protected 18650 battery.

Results? At 12 hours the battery still shows 100% charge on a ZTS tester! I may be at this a while.

This looks like one of the best p60 hosts out there, but I think I'll hold out to see if there will be a bezel down clip option available. Is there enough material in there to drill to install one?

I too am concerned about the lack of lens- are my fears unfounded?

Regarding the lens....just add one! I was slightly concerned about it but a few bucks later I have some ultra clear multi-coated goodness protecting the optic.

I have one on order, type III HA and M60 dropin, and should receive it on Tuesday. I'm a liitle concerned about the lack od a lens too. I'm going to give it a try and add a lens if warranted.

A lens seems like cheap insurance, I'm glad to hear we can get them to fit. I would love a pocket clip though. That would just about make it perfect for me. I have one on my 6p and would find it hard to go back, but the HA goodness is hard to deny.

So if i understand it right your low will always be 15/20 LM? no matter what malkoff p60 drop in you have in it?

I don't really see any reason not to use a lens. If you scratch the optic you are stuck with it, but you can always spend a few dollars and buy a new lens. Even a lens with AR coating will cause you to lose a little light, but there is no way anyone would actually notice a difference in practical usage.

Based on posts here
http://www.candlepowerforums.com/vb/showthread.php?t=226723

If a resistor is being employed, low mode will be a consistent level, relative to the battery's output, regardless of the module being employed. So

M60: 235/20
M60L: 140/20
M60LL: 80/20

with correspondingly less output for W variants. Then there's the quad emitters. Anybody got an MC-E and high/low ring to test?

Yes I think there is. I don't have anything to tap holes though. Would a McGizmo Ti clip look good on it?
EDIT: It does look pretty good. I just have to drill and tap the holes................. Not wanting to do that by hand.

Now you could arrange an EX/D 10 type clip attachment easy enough. 😀

A new optic is $1.10.

Where can you get these optics, and how do you install a new one? I would think it would still be much easier to switch out a lens. There would also be less chance of damaging the LED while swapping out a lens than a whole optic.

There is surprisingly little info on these rings, given they've been available for several weeks now. It makes the MD2 very compelling.

On a related note, the lack of a lens also presents an opportunity. If we can figure a good LDF (light diffusing film) configuration, The MD2 would not only be two level, but two beam. Want spot, leave out the lens, want flood, drop it in.

All this, combined with an M30W and AW's new 2600mah cell and you've got (at least one paper), a rock'n setup.

Don't remember which thread I read it on but, I remember chatter about 6 months ago on Gene making different diffuser caps for his drop-ins.

It was a thread where a member was testing out his m60 floods with different diffusers that Gene had provided him with...?
He had a great setup in his backyard with those fake robber cutouts the police use for practice...

Wonder if we will see the malkoff diffuser caps soon - I'd bet they would sell very well.

Those weren't "fake robber" cutouts, those are shooting targets that they use at a local gun range. I have the diffusers, Gene was thinking about marketing them but that seems to have gone by the wayside. I really like them. I have a set for the M60 size lights and a set for the triple drop in a Maglight. They won't work with a real maglight in a deep reflector, but they worked great in front of the triple drop. They were laser cut 3D holographic patterns not just frosty diffuser material.

The review of them was in my Malkoff Triple drop thread. I also had my home made diffuser in there for the triple drop but that was not like the ones he found.

But I don't see anyone selling them. G.

Hey MrGman - apologies - intention was not to belittle the targets in any way or suggest that they were homemade - "fake" was modifying "robbers" not "cutouts" 😀

Maybe Gene will comment on where those puppies disappeared to...?

I would buy a handful in a heartbeat.

I would like to know as well. I think I read someone say they thought they were sold on KD or DX, but never caught which optic they were. A "Cree 8 deg optic" is the only description I heard.
Where can you get these optics, and how do you install a new one?
