New Pelican 2350 LED Flashlight

The Gen 2 arrived today and to the untrained eye they are hard to tell apart.

I won't go so far as to say I don't like the Gen 2 and understand why Pelican made the change in beam texture spread those extra lumens over a broader area. But I do prefer the old way of beaming out photons on the 100 lumen Gen 1 in a pencil beam'd thrower. It was a treat to aim the little light into a small area like a narrow pipe and cast those not so white lumens forward some 75 to 100' without a bunch of side spill causing close up use to cast a bunch of reflected light back at me.

Yet the Gen 2 is much better suited as a general purpose light that runs off 1 double A. And according to Pelican, a lot longer than the Gen 1.

You can see the change by looking at throw and CD numbers.

But Gen 2 weatherproof is a vast improvement as well.

Bodies are identical.
Like Maglite, Pelican has picked a style and stuck with it. Bravo imo.

I did a stripe to know at a glance.

Hard to spot the new vs old.
The left is the Gen 2 which has a slightly larger "die" (is that what it's called?... that yellow thing under the dome)

Hard to meter but spot to spill is much better with the Gen 2.
If you want to call it a ratio the blend of bright spot to outter spill would be a much smoother ratio. Great for general use, where I use the Gen 1 as a niche light in my tool belt of lighting.

Being able to easily program is a boon. Half press X number of times for high only, hi/lo (no strobe) or lo/hi... or back to factory hi/strobe/lo. Unlike Streamlight ten tap the pelican way is say... 8 for factory. Half press 7 times and hold #8. Light flashes once to say "tadah". 10 gets you high only with 2 flashes. 12 gets hi/lo with 3 "tadah" flashes, 14 and 4 for lo/hi.

I like Pelican products so it didn't take much water to float my boat. And this one using a 50¢ easy to find fuel cell should make it a big seller for them.

I bought 3 Gen 1's knowing they'll be gone soon. Cannot say I'll buy another Gen 2 unless it's for gifting this fine little deal as anybody receiving it will likely find it a very useful little flashlight.

Edit: dark out now;

The pencil beam.
Note how dimly lit around the beam. Not a great general use but throw is amazing.

Huge difference.
One of the few lights I own that appears a lot brighter in general use than it's previous version, yet not even 80% more output.
One of the many reasons Ima Pelican lights fan.

:thanks: bykfixer, thanks for posting the comments and beam shots comparing the old vs. new Pelican 2350.

I received the new version today and like it a lot. The 178 lumen setting is brighter in ceiling bounce tests than my other 1xAA lights, including a Malkoff MDC and the Pelican has a slightly cool tint which I prefer.

It's a light that acts a lot brighter than 178 lumens.
I gave it thought overnight, then saw your post that confirmed that yes... it is a sweet little flashlight.

I suppose to folks who require 4 digit lumens to appear brighter than a birthday candle would yawn at this one. Eh, that's ok, we'll keep this one our little secret.

I set mine to start on the 15 lumen low as that is around the brightness level for about 90% of my needs.

A few additional observations about the Generation 2 Pelican 2350:

The head on my flashlight cannot be removed. There are 7 tail cap threads -- more than some other flashlights. The threads not anodized so loosening the tail cap does not serve as a lockout. The tail cap turns as smooth as butter.

The high setting is very bright for a 1xAA light and my 2350 initially draws a hungry 3,020 mA from an Eneloop Pro battery in high mode. I noticed a dimming or step down after about 20 minutes of continuous use in high mode. Turning the light off then on again reset the brightness to its initial bright level. I did that a few times until the light just about extinguished at 1 hour 45 minutes.

The light became warm during continuous use, but never uncomfortably so.

The knurling is aggressive so the light is grippy. Contrast that to my Streamlights and Malkoff MDC which are smooth and easily slip through my fingers.

^^ To add...
I don't dig on clips, but this one has a bezel down that I use. Nice n grippy but allows easy in or out of the front pocket, jacket or MOLLE.

Probably Ty II HA so the finish will likely show wear in time but so far my Gen 1 is still blemish free after riding in a jacket pocket since oh... October?

I was pondering an eneloop in time. Glad to see your comment on that parnass. (I have about half of about 100 3 year old Rayovac double A's to burn through so I'm in no hurry to go rechargeable.)

With the 2350's being identical I figured there'd be times the 'pencil beam' would work for a task but will mostly use the general beam but... deciding which is which at a glance could be problematic in a hurry so...

Stripes

Using glitter nail polish turned out pretty cool.
