I just got an e-mail from Photon's website for their pre-holiday sale and: Proton Pro: Back in stock and brighter than ever! -
Yes, the Proton Pro is back in stock and now features a new, even brighter LED, giving the Proton Pro a 20% boost in light output!

DO I get my hopes up thinking "new, even brighter LED" means that it's more than just a bin change? Could it be the XP-G? Heck even an XP-E would be a great improvement of the horrid XR-E beam.

I'm currently awaiting Photon's response to my e-mail.

I'd consider a new one if they re-worked the UI to default on low white instead of high white and ramping down. Also they'd need to rework that hard wire spring that damages cells. Run-time was about as good as it gets but the previous shortcomings keep me from ever using mine.

I personally like the UI as is.

Actually I just thought of an interesting idea, 2 switches, 1 side for the red and 1 rear for the white. This way you can ramp up and down on both levels, easily combine the 2 beams for increased CRI/warmth, have both flashing, even at different rates and so on. I'm sure this would be rather complicated to design though.

Interesting. It's one of my all time favorites. I probably won't get a new one, unless we see a redesign. Not that I dislike it now, but changes would help. I'll take shorter and a smooth beam, please.

Well I don't think there was any change in the specs on their page, but it could be they didn't change it. It'd be nice to have a light orange peel reflector unless they could generate a nice beam similar to Eagletac's XP-E lights.

I got that email today also. The Proton PRO has been my at-work carry light for nearly two years so I am a fan. My PRO is showing some wear so a new one would be nice. Especially with an improved LED.

I can't wait to hear what LED they've used.

Later,

Hmmm. 20% increased brightness wouldn't be that noticeable, and probably isn't enough by itself to justify an upgrade.

Improved beam quality would be more to the point.

The two-switch idea is interesting, but I have other lights like this which are a PITA - you never know whether you're going to get the red or white. At least with a single switch you can't press the wrong one !

It would if the increased runtime though. As for the dual switch, one by the head one on the tail, it's simple. Of course with one switch you can't push the wrong one, you also can't get high red or low white right away either. You can also release too soon get bright white instead of dim red.

The Proton Pro is one of my all-time favorite lights. I too would prefer the default ON mode to be the low-white led, but I can live with the current UI. Anyway, I have one of these "new" ones coming my way. I should have it in a few days.

This light need four things for me to EDC it more.

1) GROSP - Get Rid of Slimy PWM! (points for anyone who gets the reference) At least increase the frequency a lot!
2) White ONLY option. Lock out the red in UI, ...whatever, so it acts like a Photon freedom or Rex. I EVERY DAY carry my Rex or Freedom. Every Day! It rocks.
3) Hunting added to UI. Make it alternate ramping direction every time you hit the button. I would really like this in the Rex too.
4) A warmer LED. Neutral 3A to 6C would be OK

Good ideas would be:
An orange peel reflector.
Black clip to be less noticeable with dress clothing.

By implimenting most of these suggestions, what you get is a light that's already available by other makers and makes the Proton, not a Proton anymore.

I would still like an all-white one. I've kept an eye out for some decent white 3mm's to do it myself, but nothing yet that I could get for a decent price.

The only option to white/red is UV/white and the UV/white were only made because there was a large state agency order for them.

In answer to the questions about which LED is now being used for the Proton Pro, the older Protons used a P4. These new versions are now using a Q4 with a "WC" tint which gives a better tint with a whiter white. Nothing else has been changed. UI is still the same, etc. For those interested in the UV/white version, those are in stock as well.
