new here, kind of overwhelmed by the massive amount of info to sort through

I just ordered a D10/GDP for myself, but I was also looking for a flashlight that my daughter can carry on her key chain or in her purse (something low cost).

She wants something small that uses AAA or AA and has a strobe/sos mode.

any recommendations would be appreciated

A fenix Lod or a DX/kd knock-off are all I can think of. There was a link around here to a dx/or kd knockoff that was around the same specs. probably a bit cheaper as well. I'll see if I can find it.

Edit: I almost forgot.:welcome:

There's also the Liteflux LF2x, It's programmable it's got a ton of modes (I'm not sure if strobe and sos are in there; it's worth looking into though) on the downside it is a bit complex and in the higher fenix range price bracket.

The only good AAA light that has a strobe, is the LOD and that runs about 45 bucks, dont know if that is too much but its a great light. If you want something cheaper, an ultrafire c3 might be good. It can take either 1AA or 2 has 5 modes and is only 20 bucks:

You should also check out this guy:

if you can swing it though, id get her the lod, as ive said its fantastic and it is really small, it will never be a nuisance to her carrying it, and that we'll youll know she will always have it on her. Those other single AA lights are still small, but not always small enough, and if she is carrying a little bag might be an extra weight she doesnt want to deal with. The fenix E01 is also a great keychain light, but unfortunately no strobe.

Found it.

it's VERY similar to the fenix but cheaper and steel. Not sure about quality over the long run though.
The light is covered in this thread.

:caution:Also the Inova Micro light.

Very Small, it uses coincells though.
The interface goes High, low, strobe. I forget if there's an sos though.
Someone left their keys at the bar and they had one of these on there.
I got to play with the light for a while; the keys were nearly returned sans light.
They're ten - twelve bucks, and as a plus are available at some brick and mortar stores, I bet wally-world has some.

thx, will look at all those links, I may break down and get the LOD if that's what it takes

I found this one looking through the forum as well, seems ok for ~ $20, still reading through the forum though

MTE C2 5-Mode SSC 42180 Flashlight (AA)

Welcome, if you find yourself at wal-mart make sure to take a serious look at those inova micro lights. I think it's the best compromise for the money.

but only one mode - but hey not easy to get what you are asking (SOS/strobe etc) for "cheap" & small (or keyring size anyway) - that's why you are buying D10 - get her :ironic: to spring for half of a more expensive one then she might look after it - In my flashlight travels over the years I have found like everything you get what you pay for - if I buy cheap I end up having to buy again :scowl: so I should have bought the best one in the first place.
Just my opinion

yeah not a bad idea to split it with her, then everbody wins. Although not as much a present I guess. The problem with that MTE light, if its the one I think you're talking about, is that its got a plastic lens and a shoddy spring.

looks like if I decide to give it a bigger budget, then I get into the decision battle

L0D of LF2 (both run roughly the same price)

The L0D is great, got mine two weeks ago.

If the strobe is for SD however, you have to bear in mind that first an AAA light doesn't have the necessary power, second, that you have to turn the bezel 3 times on and off IRC for the strobe...

But, the output is just great for a lamp of that size! As I let fall down the head even before I began to try it seriously, I can confirm that it is quite rough, it still works like it should. On the other hand, the aluminium is thin of course and it's got a little dent from that 5 feet fall. An AA light is a lot tougher, for sure!

maybe I can talk her down to a Fenix E01, I honestly don't think she needs sos/strobe and that type of thing, it's just a little purse light

man, you can literally read for days with all this good info on the forum, good ole information overload heh

figured if I can just get her a tiny light without all the features I found the e01 but then I ran across another comparison thread and the KD Buckle V4 doesn't look too bad either

oh well...thx for all the replied, I have plenty of information to read through on the forum at least heh

Thats a good idea, start her with an E01 and then if she wants more light, move up. That way she'll still have the E01 for a backup if you upgrade her.

I agree, get her the E01, the buckle is too bright for most things and usually isnt worth the sacrifice to runtime. The batteries will die on her and she will throw it in a drawer and forget about it.

thx for all the replies, will go with the E01 and work from there

I'm looking forward to getting my D10,GDP

great forum btw

btw, not sure if allowed on the forum but if anyone wants to send me a PM on a good place to order I would appreciate it, I like to support companies that are involved in forums and whatnot

fenix-store.com, there is also a discount for cpf members, which I think is "CPF 8"
