New here. Have a 2d Maglite(Yes I know they are junk etc) BUT I want to do a led conversion or something to make it brighter. I've done the maglite 3w and the nite ize leds and both kinda suck excecpt the NE is a little better. IS there any kind of kit or bulb thats drop in to make this thing bright? I have a minimag with a triple led from niteize and thats bright enough that you cant look at it. The 2d is nowhere near as bright.

Welcome to CPF, there are numerous amounts of drop in's that should dramatically increase your output.
Do a search for "maglite drop in's".

Also, are you sure a Minimag 3LED is brighter than your 3W drop in, in a maglite?

also, hold on to your wallet. :mecry:

That malkoff one is NICE but wow thats $$ . The mini with 3leds is def brighter..no idea why. The search dumps me to an error page lol

I have done the same thing, then I started buying new lights, and light shined on me :naughty:

I just resolved myself to using the cheaply modded 4D MagLites with MagLeds and then went looking. Cheaper to get new than to keep fixing old. Some of my Mags dated back years so it was hard to let go ... The old Mags now are doing trunk duty and for long throw needs.

First up for me was an EDC light, I went cheap with a $6 Dorcy key chain light from Walmart, then a RR lantern from Target -- the wife was wowed, then a RayOVac 2AA 85 Lumens light from Walmart, then a charger, then some Hybrids. Now I am fitting all my radio gear with AA rechargeable battery trays ... I think I am catching something.

Cold turkey break with the past is best :twothumbs

I would wonder if you got the wrong 3W upgrade for your Mag. Maglite sells specific upgrades for a specific number of cells. If you accidentally bought a 4-cell upgrade for your 2-cell light, that would yield a hopelessly dim light for example.

i think it's right I'll double check I know the nite eyez one is for several ranges of cells. I like the one above...just wondering if its worth 24.00

The Malkoff dropin is the superior dropin hands down, but yes for someone just starting out it does seem expensive. And furthermore it is near un-obtainable due to the limited numbers made and the huge line of CPFers that want one (myself included).

That Terralux dropin has okay but not stellar reviews around here that I've read. But for the pirce it is good and it will still be far better than a Night Eyes or an official Mag dropin. I'd say try that one out.

Don't worry about the Maglite nay sayers.
Good basic unit, enought to be the first one police types could bet their lives on. Modern stuff so much better.
Get good upgrades for LED Maglites.
I have 3 Magchargers, 5 different Maglites all converted and couple of minimags stashed in vehicles in case an old man like me forgets something.
Today a lot better stuff availavle for reasonable prices.
Love my Fenix, Lumapowers etc.
Hard to decide what to use when I have to go do a re-qualification course in low light shooting next month. If it was rifles, no contest, Surefire
951 on M4 forgery.
Remember one is none, two is one and at least 3 is better.
Get good quality LED upgrades.

There are drop-in modules available that can make your maglite brighter then when it was fresh out of the packaging. The first I'd easily recommend you is Gene Malkoff's drop-in. It is the very best maglite drop-in in term of output, regulation and heat control that your money can buy currently. The only problem is that they are hard to come buy for many and are expensive to those who read about them at $75.

The second I'd recommend you is EverLED. While not nearly as bright as the above, it will serve you well unless you really want something that will cause temporary blindness. It plenty bright for when the lights go out or for when you're doing work under the sink. Like the Malkoff drop-in, it runs on inexpensive and easy to find D cell alkalines, but will last you much longer as it doesn't require the power the Malkoff does. It cost's $40, but IMHO, that's money well spent.

I want to do a led conversion or something to make it brighter.

This might be a big over sell, but ......I'm thinking 2x18650 plus MOP reflector, ROP LOLA, and pvc pipe adapter. I love my Mag 3c LOLA with MOP.

$10 for 2 Ultrafire 18650
$25 for MOP Reflector
$15 for 18650 charger
$5.50 for borofloat lens
pvc from home depot.

MAG's do not need to be JUNK. The great thing about a $16 host with $100 of mods is when you beat the heck out of the light, you simply buy another $16 shell.

Not sure this is a route you want, just throwing it out there. I think the ROP LOLA doesn't get the credit it deserves. 2 X 18650 works perfect in a 3c maglite. I would have to check the length on 2d.

Good luck with whatever you choose.

Im a fan of the terralux's "bang for the buck" For $25, you get a ton of light. Yea, some people have said bad things, but they've sold a lot more that people aren't complaining about. They say they overheat and dim, etc, but if you're not running your light constantly, give it a try. Don't worry, you've got the bug now, the malkoff will seem like a deal after a few months around here.

yeah, between(now) this , my Jeep and knives.....theres goes the money

I currently have a Malkoff in a 2D with 3 c's crammed in it so it will run at 1A. I love it. I'm tempted to try and snag one of his newer versions to either put in a 3D with 4 c's, or a 4D with 4D's to run at 1100mah. The 4D would give a lot of light for a long time for an emergancy situation.

You could spend just as much money on lesser products only to find you're not happy with them, when you could have just had a Malkoff. :)

>>I've done the maglite 3w and the nite ize leds and both kinda suck excecpt the NE is a little better.

Something is wrong here. The MagLED 2D should be way brighter than the NiteIze, and almost 2x as bright as the stock bulb. It's a good upgrade -- yes the Malkoff is even better -- but you should see a significant improvement with the MagLED 2D. As others have said, make sure you really do have the right model -- even if you bought the right package it could have the wrong part in it.
